I will begin by noting that last November the Globe and Mail reported that according to Statscan, RRSP contributions were down for the first time since 1991. Statscan reported a decline of 3.8 per cent, from $27.7 billion in 1997, to $26.6 billion in 1998. In fact Canadians con- tributed only 11 per cent of their total allowable limit, which stood at $242.1 billion. Personal income has alot to do with it. In 1998 Canadians with incomes of $80,000 or more, invested an average of $13,298. Those with an income of $60,000 to $79,998 con- tributed on average $6,356. The effect of payroll taxes has a lot to do with this failed opportunity. There is only so much money left to go around after taxes are paid from a paycheque. Lives have to be lived, and futures set aside for another year. We Canadians may be told that we live in an enviable place, but we sure do pay a massive fee for that opportunity. Now we all know that it is up to us to prepare for our own retirement. Owning a home is one way to proceed. Our tax laws allow us to sell that home and keep the proceeds, free from taxation. Owning a house is then a very important tax benefit over the long run. The RRSP is a little beauty. Every dollar contributed is deductible from income for tax purposes. Finding the dollars to contribute can be difficult. You may have a bond. a good quality stock or a GIC that you can deposit in 'place of cash into your RRSP. Search about. Find such an asset and get 'that asset journalled into your RRSP as your contribution. You have now_ created for yourself a tax deduction and kept the asset. As important, everything earned by assets in an RRSP are tax free earnings. If you don't have any investment assets, then consider borrowing the money, all of your allowable contri- bution, and get that cash into your RRSP. Earn that deduction, and then invest the cash to grow! | say invest to grow because the RRSP is a hideout for cash for tomor- row and retirement. | believe that one should really bear down and try to make the RRSP grow, again, simply because every dollar earned in the RRSP is free from the shearing crush of taxation. How you handle your money outside the RRSP is your busi- ness, and the business of the taxman. How you handle, invest, the money in your RRSP is your business. The RRSP is important now and for the future. It is up to you and a good advisor to see you through to that future. Good luck. Courtesy of, Peter A.
