Forty one years ago on Jan. 15, 1959, the Dodd & Souter success story began when Grant Dodd «a and brother-in-law "* Howard Souter opened the doors of their small store at 107 Byron St. S. in Whitby. In the beginning the partners combined their vast knowledge in the paint and wallpaper business to fulfill the decorating needs of homes and businesses in the Oshawa and Whitby area. But recognizing that there was more to the decorating business than paint and wallpaper they expanded into carpets and broadloom before the end of 1959. Business flourished with --« the new additions to their services and due to increasing demand from their customers, they added draperies to their store. Also in 1971, the store offered its growing clientele the best in hard surface flooring. ' In 1972 Grant's son Guy and Howard's son Grant joined the firm. With the joining of the sons and their affinity for broadloom, drapes and hard surface flooring it was decided to sell the paint and wallpaper business in 1975. Grant Souter and Chris Hoddy became partners in 1986 and the staff remained much the same until 1988 when Guy Dodd passed away un- expectedly and Steve Sandford joined the firm as its newest partner. Chris Hoddy left the firm in 1996 and Grant Souter's daughter Michelle joined the company. That same year Grant Dodd, the remaining founder of the business retired.
