ee ---------------- | § 4 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 14, 2000 New ball park's priority of Cartwright sports group By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Cartwright Sports and Recreation group says a new baseball diamond will be the top priority as it moves ahead with improvements at the park in Nestleton. | Wilma Wotten told members of the township parks and recreation committee Monday morning that adding a new diamond was identified as a priority at a public meeting held late last fall. And she said second on the list will be a soccer field. Mrs. Wotten is chair of the Cartwright Sports and Rec group. She was accompanied at Monday's meeting by directors Colin Kemp and Dave Frew. The delegation also put in a request for just under $10,000, to pay for conceptual drawings by a. qualified landscape architect to show exactly what will go where on the 28 acres of land surrounding the community hall in Nestleton. The land was purchased last year by the Birth Ecstatic great grandparents Marion & Ralph Lee are thrilled to announce the arrival of Zachary Michael Born December 29, 1999 at the Ross 8 Memorial Hospital, Lindsay at 5:15 § pm., weighing lbs. 5 ozs, & 22" long. \ Proud parents are Leanne & Mike McGriskin municipality for new recreation facilities. The township committee, comprised of all members of council, agreed to the tequest for the money, but it will be discussed in upcoming budget meetings. In agreeing to cover the cost of conceptual drawings, councillors cautioned that future requests for capital spending at the park will be handled in the same way as requests from other local groups and organizations: The user group raises half the amount, and the town- ship kicks in the other half. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt pointed out that the municipality spent $125,000 last year to. purchase the 28 acres of land. . Mr. Frew said that money from the sale by the town- ship of three lots in Blackstock was earmarked for recreation improvements in Ward 4, and that levies for recreation purposes are charged on every new lot cre- ated in Ward 4. : Mr. Kemp said the conceptual drawings will allow the Cartwright group to proceed with its own fundrais- ing, as they will be able to show potential donors exact- ly what is being planned. He said the cost of the conceptual drawings does not include future detailed architectural design for the actual construction of a new diamond, soccer pitch, or other facilities. Parks and rec committee chair Ken Carruthers said it's important that the project get started in a positive fashion, with a conceptual design prepared by a pro- fessional architect. And he agreed that the township should cover the cost. A public meeting is scheduled for April 3 to bring residents up to date, and about a month later the Cartwright group will return to council with detailed plans for the development of the sports and rec facili- ties in Nestleton. Family Farm Tribute's Sunday at ACC Organizers hope to raise awareness surrounding family farms when a special tribute to them is held this weekend at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. An effort by MPs, media out- "lets, and a number of major cor- porate sponsors will come together this Sunday when Family Farm Tribute 2000 is held, said Durham MP Alex Shepherd last week. "The whole purpose of this is to get back to the family farm... we really need to raise the pub- lic"s. awareness of them," said Mr. Shepherd. "For the last four years or so there have been less and less farms, but they're still producing all our food. They're a small group, but each and every one of us depend on them when we sit down at the dinner table." It is time to thank them for their commitment to our food source, added the local MP. "It is time we honoured them for all the hard work they do and we're going to try and take that message from the farms across Canada to downtown Toronto and into the living rooms of urban homes," he said. Scheduled to perform or make an appearance that afternoon are. Gordon Lightfoot, Randy Bachman, Prairie Oyster, Michael Burgess, Kevin Parent, Sharon, Lois and Bram, Fred Penner, Big Sugar, Jimmy Rankin, Fred Eaglesmith, Wide Mouth Mason, Ronnie Hawkins, Amanda Stott, Sylvia Tyson, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
