In sending Attorney-General Jim Flaherty to take part in the hearing, a challenge by the federal government of a previous ruling on child pornography possession, the province is making a clear statement on the issue, and doing so in the proper venue. At issue will be rulings by British Columbia courts that simple possession of child pornography should not be considered ille- gal, as such an assumption would be an infringement upon the personal rights and freedoms guaranteed in Canada's constitu- tion. The federal government will argue that such an infringement is justified, given the repugnant nature of child pornography and the harm youngsters are subjected to when it is made and distributed. This is one rare instance in which we agree that a sacrificing of individual rights of expression and thought is for the greater good. And this time we're with the Premier, Mike Harris, when he says that a law banning possession of child pornography will give police the power they need to seek, find, and prosecute the manufacturers and consumers of such material. There will be no damage done to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by a successful appeal of the B.C. rulings. Rather, there will be a clearly stated intention to protect the vulnerable. Operation Scugog thanks supporters To the Editor: As we have started the millennium with- out any obstacles, we the committee of Operation Scugog have again completed another successful Christmas campaign. Special thanks goes out to Pastor John Benschop of the Victory Christian Centre for the use of the facilities to distribute the Christmas hampers. We would also like to thank Pastor Cindy Peck for her assistance and guidance by giving her time and pastoral assistance dur- ing that day, to Victor Walker for his expertise in heating the gymnasium, to John and 'Kathy Foster for the set-up of the facilities, the parking lot and organizing the drop-off and pick-up of the hampers, to Janice Callaghan for directing traffic on such a cold day, to Betty Reed and all of the kitchen 'helpers for providing the luncheon and refreshments for our volunteers during the day, to John Reed and the students from the high school who assisted during the day with carrying all of the hampers and to all of the volunteers who helped carry and deliver the Christmas hampers. The enthu- siasm of all the helpers was a joyous sight on such a hectic day. Operation Scugog would like to thank all of the churches, local businesses, schools, organizations and local families and indi- viduals for adopting and preparing hampers filled with food, gifts and toys. We-also appreciate receiving all of the monetary donations as we were able to provide each hamper with a turkey voucher. Residents of Chateau Blue House received gifts of clothing, toiletries and candies. The Central Seven Association received a monetary contribution to buy gifts for their residents and the participants of the C.O.P.E. program enjoyed a luncheon and gifts at their Christmas party. Many seniors who take part in Luncheon Date received boxes of cookies. Without all of your kindness, generosity and assistance we would not have been able to brighten the Christmas season for 156 families in the Township of Scugog. We all appreciate your tremendous support not only at Christmas but during the year to be able to serve the families throughout our community. May the joy of giving be with you during our new millennium year, 2000. Thank you for your tremendous support. - Kathy Foster, Kathryn Gundry and Ann Wanninkhof
