2 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" Damage in the thousands Vandals hit at Birdseye Centre again Vandals have struck at the Birdseye Centre once again, this time racking up more than $3,000 in damages. Durham Police were called to attend the Water St. facility on Jan. 19 after the damage was discovered by a municipal employee. It is believed the incident occurred some time in January. The building was used as a change room and washroom for Birdseye Pool for years, until Scugog council opted to close the pool last summer instead of pouring money into costly repairs. The vandals entered the building by smashing through a sliding door, say police. Once inside, they used a mop, buck- et, and ringer to destroy two paper towel holders, two toilet paper dis- pensers, and three toilets. The sliding glass window was also smashed. In an earlier incident, vandals stripped half the shingles off the build- ing's west side, and stole more than a dozen lifejackets, which were strewn along the Lake Scugog shoreline. Total damage is estimated at approx- imately $3,400. Repairs to the building and the future of the Birdseye Centre will be brought forward at an upcoming g township parks committee meeting.
