High school cur- riculums provide opportu- nities to research and com- ment upon current activities, but the Durham Federal Liberal Committee was looking for an oppor- * tunity to hear directly from students their own insights and ideas on how policy would look if they had the chance to shape the direc- tions in which social spend- ing and legislation would take, and how that would enable our country to be better and stronger. To make this exercise inter- esting, the committee cre- ated 'an Essay Writing Contest offering a cash reward to the winner of $1,000. The school boards shared in our enthusiasm for this new project, and in the fall of 1998, approved plans to offer a Bursary Award for the Essay Contest to all graduating students in the public and separate school boards located in: the riding of Alex Shepherd M.P. The contest was titled "My vision for the Future of Canada," and accepted essays from all students regardless of party affilia- tions. Seven high schools par- ticipated in the contest, submitting a total of 75 "essays to the association for review. A'selection com- mittee of readers from the association was created to choose the top 20 of these essays, which were then passed to a final selection committee made up of pro- fessional writers from the community, and Alex Shepherd M.P. We would like to thank our final selec- tion community for their Peter Hvidsten, Publisher of the Port Perry Star and Sher Leetooze, Author and Historian. Their task cer- tainly wasn't easy, but eventually they narrowed the selection to one essay written by Andrea Etmanskie of Clarke High School. In a letter written to the association by J. Peter Hvidsten, he stated, "I must say, that the essays, for the most part, were ' enlightening. It was most encouraging to read their concerns for Canada and their thoughts on how to improve this great nation. Thanks for the opportunity." The association was also fortunate enough to receive support from local artist Bill Lishman, who designed and created an original sculpture that LOOK FORWARD TO | WEATHER WARNINGS 2000 EXPLORER 2-DR SPORT 4X4 would be the trophy to be displayed in the winning student's school for the year. Mr. Lishman crafted a magnificent trophy, that added a prestigious touch to the grand prize winnings of the $1,000 and a small plaque for the winner. The money for the Bursary was raised through donations from local supporters Robert and Betty Ronin, Re/Max Scugog, Enterprise Air Inc., and Plumbers Union Local 463. The association expresses its gratitude for their contributions to this project, and thanks them for their continued support over the upcoming years. The contest will be offered on a yearly basis to the high schools in Alex 'Shepherd's riding, and we look forward to an increas- ing amount of interest and participation in the project.
