PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2000 - 29 STAR GAZERS - This group of guides and leaders from the 3rd Port Perry Girl Guides toured The Port Perry Star on Feb. 7, learning about how a newspaper is published, one step in earning their 'reporters badge.' They learned how photographs are taken on digital cameras, processed through a computer and placed on the page, and also how the pages are processed into large negatives. Commissioner critical of Mariposa council From Page | lion to $6.4 million. The report says that cost would be covered by provincial government as has been the practice in other areas . Any of the three choices in the 'report suggest that Mariposa resi- dents' taxes will not change. But Reeve Barbara Kelly said she does not believe this. The report states that reserves and debts will remain with the municipalities that created them but physical assets such as land, buildings, trucks and recreational facilities will become the property of the newly-formed municipality. Mariposa councillors have iden- tified surplus municipal land that can be sold to increase reserves, and are in the process of doing so despite opposition from council- lors Ron Hamilton and Ruth Lyons. Councillor Lyons feels that this action is too little too late, and the cost being incurred will not be recoverable if the process is stopped before completion. Mariposa council will host a public session on Feb. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Oakwood council cham- ber to review the report and pre- pare a collective staff and council response to the commission. More than 120 submissions have been received to date by the com- mission, with strong support indi- cated for the single-tier system, said Mr. Kitchen. During his press conference last week Mr. Kitchen was very critical of the quality of elected officials and their lack of ability to make decisions, resulting in the need for the appointment of a commission. He also was critical of councillors who were trying to be administra- tors instead of limiting their responsibilities to policy setting and funding, not on delivery of services. He emphasized that residents must choose their representatives wisely. "Accessibility, effectiveness and the quality of the representa- tion system depends on it," he said. Mariposa residents may make verbal and written submission for or against any of the options, to the commission on Feb. 16 at the Lindsay Armouries from 2 to 5 p.m. or 6:30 to 9:30 p.m or by fax 705- 745-8095 or email hkitchen@tren- tu.ca prior to Feb. 25. A final report and proposals for provincial approval will be released on March 27.
