Coolest game on ice Former NHLers take on Scugog's best next weekend in a charity match to raise funds for a second ice pad By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Former National Hockey League play- ers will take on a group of Port Perry's best next weekend to help raise funds for a second ice pad here in Scugog. The NHL Oldtimers Charity Hockey Game will be held at the Scugog Arena on Feb. 27, with the faceoff at 3 p.m. Already confirming their appearance at the game are former Toronto Maple Leafs Brian and Pete Conacher and Mike Pelyk, recently retired New York Ranger Jeff Beukeboom, Chicago Blackhawk Brent. Grieve, Winnipeg Jet Mike Amodeo, and former Philadelphia Flyer Derrick Smith. Other special guests will arrive throughout the day. Providing the opposition for the for- mer pros will be the Port Perry All-Stars, says organizer Steve Webb. "We'll have an assembly of local tal- ent," he said earlier this week. "We're going to have a few local business owners and we're going to try and incorporate all the (arena) user groups as well as we're going to try and get a line out - there made up from the MoJacks." Tentatively scheduled to suit up from the local Junior C squad are Adam Jones, Nick Pelyk, and Ryan McQuade. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., and is expected to wrap up around 5 p.m. An autograph session will held before the game for about an hour, begin- ning at | p.m. at the arena. Memorabilia vendors will also on hand. Tickets to the event are $5 each, and there will be a variety of door prizes, draw prizes and raffles to be win. The top prize will be a framed print of "The Gardens" by artist S. Houston. It depicts former stars Bobby Baun, Eddie Shack, Stan Makita and Johnny Bower in action at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. It is autographed by all the players and was donated by Mr. Baun. Other prizes include a Titan hockey stick signed by the entire 1999-2000 Leafs squad; four admission tickets to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto; a program from the Boston Bruins' last visit to the Gardens, autographed by former Leaf Mike Johnson; and tickets to see the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre. A small silent auction will also be held, and will include items such as a game-used sticks belonging to goal- tender Grant Fuhr and sniper Adam Oates. Carlton The Bear, the Leafs' official mascot, will be making his way through the crowd and The Royal Bank will be holding a twoonie-toss during one of the intermissions. Participants place a twoonie inside a provided envelope and toss them onto the ice, with the five closest coins to centre ice deemed win- ners. All proceeds will go towards the con- struction of a new second ice pad at the Scugog Arena. "I'm going to use this event as a barom- eter of how people feel about a second ice pad. If we can pack the place and people show a desire for another ice pad, then great, I'll use that as a mea- suring stick and know people are appre- ciating what I'm trying to do here. The cost of adding a second pad to the Scugog Arena is estimated at approx- imately $2 million. Other events in the past have raised roughly $20,000 towards the cost.Mr. Webb hopes to receive additional funds from the federal gov- ernment's infrastructure program and from the National Hockey League Players' Association, who have commit- ted to help out the hockey community around the world. Tickets are $5 each, and can be picked up at the Scugog Township office (985- 7393) or at the Scugog Arena (985-8698). Tickets may be on sale at the door, but availability is not guaranteed. We've been able to maintain 1999 registration costs due to the sound fis- cal management of the for- mer committee, comment- ed Rick Lepp, the newly-appointed Chairperson of the Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association (PPD.MS.A)). Single player fees have remained very reasonable for the past several years and we are hopeful that the new committee will continue this trend. "Softball will continue to be a relatively inexpen- sive way to get young peo- ple involved in a team sport. Along with the opportunity to build valu- able social and team skills, the players each receive a team shirt, a ball cap, a team and individual photo and a medal or trophy fol- lowing the end of the sea- son tournament. "Fundraising for any organization remains an important part of deferring the costs to its members. The P.P.D.M.S.A. will con- tinue with its raffle fundraiser where registrants each receive $20 worth of raffle tickets included in the cost of join- ing a team. When these tickets are sold this lessens the cost of the season by $20. "We have purchased five prizes for this raffle, total- ing approximately $1000.
