4 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2000 Young dancer pursues National Ballet dream By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Zara McAlister is one step away from living out one of her childhood dreams. The 10-year-old Port Perry girl recently passed the first stage necessary to gain entry into The National Ballet School in Toronto, and is now gearing up for her second audition, a month-long stint with the school later this year. A student at the Island Dance Studio, Zara has received pri- vate training from Richelle Kinley-Van Dyk since last September. After assessing Zara's skill and talent, it was decided that she should attend the open audition held at the ballet school earlier this month. "She went to an open audi- tion on Feb. 6 at the school," said Mrs. Kinley-Van Dyk, explaining that the National Ballet School holds an audition tour across the country from. October to March looking for new students. "She spent .two and a half hours there doing a ballet class taught by one of the teachers there, and was accompanied by a pianist," she said. "There were 30 in her group that day, and the school looks at more than 1,000 students during the audition... to get past this was something." Ten-year-old Zara McAlister during a session with dance instructor Richelle Kinley-Van Dyk. recently at the Island Dance Studio. The young dancer has completed the first stage of auditions for the National Ballet School, and hopes to be enrolled in the pro- gram next year. There is a good chance Zara will be accepted at the school, "good height and very good says Mrs. Kinley-Van Dyk, noting bones and muscles and she her student is "very graceful, has jumped quite high, the highest out of all of them. She has springs in her feet." Moving on to the next stage, Zara will spend the month of july at the Spectrum United Summer School in Toronto, training daily. Her final acceptance into The National Ballet School will determined then. If she does receive an invita- tion into the highly-acclaimed school, she will be enrolled into the full-time Professional Ballet/Academic Program, which accommodates 150 students from across Canada and the world in Grades 5 to 12. Her day will last from 8:30 a.m. until well after 5 p.m., and she will study all regular acade- mic subjects plus the history of art and ballet, as well as incor- porate at least three hours of dance and fitness training into her schedule. "It's hard, but it's what she wants to do," said Mrs. Kinley- Van Dyk. "She'll do well, she's good at it. Zara works really, real- ly hard at it. Not only does she have the talent, the physique, and works hard, but she loves it. That's a lucky combination." Zara, a quiet girl who attends Grade 5 at R.H. Cornish in French Immersion, is "very excit- ed. "I've always wanted to go The National Ballet School," she said. a 1 THERADY & COUNSELLING Dr. Bill Eull, Ph.D..C.Psych Psychologist Joyce Eull RN. inéricis a Psychotherapist North Durham Professional Counsellors 188 Mary Street, Port Perry 985-1130 « 1-800-253-0181 ¥ trau Mma Communications = + Service calls are free + High Speed Internet +» Extra outlets are on Cable free* + No phone lines * TMN has 5 channels to + No busy Signals choose from * Always connected * And more channels to + 100 times faster than come traditional dial + Competitive rates * Ultimate internet » No equipment to buy experience » Saving hundreds of $$ - Gift Certificates * conditions apply available 'For your convenience Saturday call centre appointments are Now Available! now open Saturdays, 9-4 First Prize - $10,000 5 prizes of $500 © 25 Prizes of $100 Draw Date March 31, 2000 at 8:00pm st Chamber Offies 1 Early Bird Prize - $500 ~ Draw Date: February 28, 2000 (Cut-off date - Feb. 21, 2000) * Proceeds for Canada, Fastival Days and Santa Claus Parade 2000 Winning ticket wil be drawn under the supervison of Roger B.
