Maybe it's a feeling of detachment. Folks here may be hard- pressed to see how a subdivision in Richmond Hill is going to ° affect them. Or maybe there's just no sense of urgency because we are confronted with so many environmental issues, and this is just another in a long list of natural resources the conserva- tionists tell us we ought to be defending. But if you give a damn about the place in which you live, you should care about the Oak Ridges Moraine. It's a phenomenal resource, from which percolates the water supply for our lake and rivers, and those beyond Scugog, for a huge area. Its health dictates our health; damage done to the moraine could be irreparable. If developments farther south in the GTA don't concern you, consider the Gan Eden proposal just next door in Uxbridge Township. Once again, you have a big-time developer with extensive connections and deep pockets, only this time the local and regional politicians are taking a stand against it. The proposal is close to home, and if it proceeds, it will affect you. We're not saying everyone ought to start painting placards and set up pickets right away. Just suggesting that attention must be paid to what is a serious and complex issue. Like the old blues song says: You don't miss your water 'til your well runs dry. If you have an interesting picture we could use for Photo of the Week, please drop it by LETTERS To the Editor: This is in response to Eleanor McCallum"s letter (Group is fighting for moraine, Feb. 18). Eleanor was critical of the reported con- tent of an earlier talk that | gave concerning the Oak Ridges Moraine. She quotes me as saying "There are currently no groups in Scugog supporting the Oak Ridges Moraine." There is no question that there are numerous other groups, many in the Scugog region, which have already petitioned the province on the issue. Generally, however, these groups were originally formed for other reasons, such as the Kawartha Fisheries Association where | was speaking. For what it's worth, the statement | made was that as far as | knew, no group in Scugog has been formed for the sole purpose of addressing development on the Moraine. Such single purpose groups have been formed in Uxbridge and in Goodwood. Of necessity, newspaper stories must be IRSA 7D) 177771700000 , 7, / 17 ; 4 4 Hf 70 Hin Remark wasn't intended as a slight toward moraine's many supporters crisp and short: Even letters to the editor are sometimes shortened. What may have been important points to a speaker or to a writer may get eliminated. Sometimes, statements that are. public knowledge are not printed every time. There is no question that | gave credit to our council's well informed and forceful actions concerning unbridled development on the Moraine. In fact, their work is partially why | became an activist on the issue in the first place. | welcome the actions taken by the Brooklin Horticultural Society and encour- age other groups to do likewise. Only through people who care like Eleanor McCallum and caring organizations can there be balanced and reasoned devel- opment of the Moraine.
