Beare passes away at 79 The community was saddened this week to learn of the passing of a long-time and respected Port Perry businessman, William T. Beare. He died peacefully at the hospital in Port Perry in his 80th year. Mr. Beare started his career in the automotive business, working for his father Cecil at Beare Motors when he was 16. After the death of his father, he continued to operate the business with his brother Storey for a total of 44 years. They sold their Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership in January 1981. During his years in business, Mr. Beare served as an executive member of the Port Perry Businessman's Association and the Chamber of Commerce, and spent many years as a member of the Central Ontario County District William T. Beare High School Board. He was chairman of the school board when a new addition to Port Perry High School opened in November 1960. Months after selling Beare Motors, he became a charter mem- ber of the newly-formed Rotary Club of Port Perry in July 1981, and was an active member until his death last Monday (March 6). During his years with the club he was recognized for his outstanding contribu- tions by being awarded the Rotary's most presti- gious award, the Paul Harris Fellow. Although his health had been failing for the past couple of years after a fall, he remained active in Rotary, attend- ing meetings, and help- ing organize the club's Artfest and annual golf tournament. Mr. Beare was pre- deceased by his wife Betty on Dec. 22, 1999. He leaves behind three sons, William and his wife Ruth, Rick and his wife Joan and Paul and his wife Valerie, and seven grandchildren. A service to celebrate the life of Bill Beare was held at Port Perry United Church on March 9, officiat- ed by the Rev. Robert Le Page. Blackstock home is robbed Durham Police were called to a Blackstock home earlier this week after it was discovered thieves had broken into the residence. Officers were dis- patched to a Byers Rd. address on March 6 after a housesitter found the home had been entered by thieves. A colour televi- sion set was stolen. School vandalized The Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Port Perry was the target of vandals over the past weekend. Police report that sometime between March 3 and 5 someone tossed a brown brick through a glass insert in a south door.
