PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2000 - § BIA going global with new web site Port Perry's Business Improvement Area is going global, and they're inviting everyone in the downtown core to join them on the World Wide Web. In an effort to stir up interest in the shops and services of Port Perry, the BIA plans to go on-line April 1. The site www.down- townportperry.com will enable customers and clients to visit local busi- nesses on the Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week, says BIA marketing director Debbie McEachern. "We're going to start slowly by the beginning of April and continue to grow from there. In a couple of months we'd like to see the majority of the busi- nesses in the area on the site," she said. Those logging on to the site will be welcomed by an introduction page before viewing a map of the streets of Port Perry. Businesses- taking part in the promotion will see their names and locations on the screen. ~ Customers can click on any of the listed business- es, and a general list of the store's hours, address, ser- vices, and other informa- tion will appear. The downtown Port Perry site will also offer tourists a unique way to plan their holidays, and a community events calen- dar will be included to pro- mote activities held by the BIA, Rotary Club, and other service clubs and public organizations. The BIA represents businesses in an area bor- dered by Mary, Simcoe, North and Water Streets in Port Perry. "We wanted to get all of the downtown businesses under one umbrella," said Ms McEachern. "We want to use it as a promotional tool for tourists, but also to let the people here in Scugog know what busi- nesses and services there are." There is no charge for BIA members to be includ- ed on the site. They must pass along any information on their business they would like to see included. For more information on the website, contact the Scugog Tourist Information Centre at 985-4971.
