Whitby. Billed as Words in Whitby: A . Celebration of Authors, this spectacular ~event showcased both local writers, . Susanna Kearsley ("Mariana") of Oshawa and Jonathan van Bilsen » (Quentin Wright series) of Utica. Along with homegrown talent, the taudience was treated to readings by 'best selling mystery writer, Peter 'Robinson, from his latest Inspector ' Banks book, "In a Dry Season." Two rising stars of the publishing scene, Brad Smith ("One-Eyed Jacks") 'and Andrew Pyper ("Lost Girls"), cap- 'tured audiences with their storytelling "style. Journalist Linden Macintyre read from his hauntingly beautiful novel, "The Long Stretch" while Bravo! BookTV host, Ziggy Lorenc, emceed the entire series and interviewed the authors on stage. A real highlight of the two-day series was the gala luncheon in the Centennial Building's Regal Room. Attended by most of the authors at the series, guests were thrilled when Barbara and Ormond Mitchell, daughter-in-law and son of one of Canada's best-loved writers, W.O. Mitchell, addressed the gathering. Alternating between readings from their biography, "W.O.: The Life of W.O. Mitchell" and showing magnificent slides from "W.0O. Country" by Courtney Milne, the Mitchells captivated the audience with W.O.'s trademark combi- nation of wit and poignancy. While the audience certainly gave the series a "two thumbs up" designa- tion, it was the comments by Linden Macintyre that boosted organizers egos when he compared Words in Whitby with Harbourfront"s International Festival of Authors. In fact, Mr. Macintyre was advised by his publisher, Doubleday, that Durham Region is one of the 'hot spots' for authors to visit. Judging from the audi- ence's reactions, it is likely that "Words in Whitby: A Celebration of Authors" will become an annual event.
