His incorporation of a single-tier government - despite 84 per cent of the 613 written submissions being opposed to that model - was antici- : pated. But the new name, City of - Kawartha Lakes, and his nine-mem- ber transition board, left everyone .- speechless. Towns, townships--and counties - are gone along with municipal coun- cils as of Dec. 31, 2000, to be replaced by the. corporation of the City of Kawartha Lakes with the slo- = BES gan "Victoria County: A New Beginning." Sixteen wards having an average population of 4,750 each will be formed, with one mayor elected at large in November to run the new city of 76,000 residents. Mr. Kitchen emphasized the importance for residents to elect quality councillors to determine the new system's success or failure. Mariposa will be divided into two wards. One is south of Hwy. 7, exclud- ing Oakwood but including the area from Manilla to Lake Scugog. The- other lies north of Farmstead Rd. including Oakwood and Woodville, to the Trent System and taking in most of Eldon. The election will be run by the Lindsay clerk's office.
