SE PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" sh EF a haa ol 3 2 on SE aaa FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 2000 - 19 The Kent 'Farndale Bursary for the Arts was established in 1992 to pro- vide financial assistance to residents of Scugog Township who wish to pur- sue a specific field of study in the arts. People of all ages are eligible to receive this bursary, which is awarded annually in the spring. The winner of this year's bursary is Carey Nicholson of Port Perry, who creates hand-woven baskets and hand-knitted and machine-knitted garments. Previously trained as a dancer; this energetic young woman believes passionately in, and works dedicatedly towards, her artistic vision, which is a synthesis of all her cre- ative experience. Ms Nicholson is active in many organizations relat- ing to her art field and the local community, such as the Ontario Crafts Council, the Scugog Shores Spinners and Weavers Guild, the Scugog Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Scugog Spring Studio Tour. The bursary presenta- tion will take place in the Kent Farndale Gallery at the Scugog Memorial Public Library in Port Perry at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16. The public is welcome to attend, to meet Ms Nicholson and Mrs. Farndale, and enjoy some light refreshments. The selection process was very challenging this year. The bursary commit- tee, composed of six vol- unteers from the commu- nity, was sincerely impressed with all the applicants, and regretted that only one recipient could be selected to receive the $500- bursary. Applications were received from people of all ages, studying dance, drama, vocal and instru- mental music, graphics, fine art, textile art and ani- mation. It is exciting to see so many talented people from Scugog Township pur- suing their dreams in the arts. \ Last year, the Rotary Club of Port Perry became a major sponsor of the Kent Farndale Bursary for the Arts, with, a commit- ment to make a significant annual contribution to the fund. Donations from the public are also needed to support the bursary. During her 10 year asso- ciation with the Scugog Memorial Public Library, Kent Farndale established a well-respected and thriv- ing art gallery within the library building. When she retired as curator in 1992, the gallery was named the ounced Kent Farndale Gallery, in appreciation for a decade of her volunteer service. At the same time, the Kent Farndale Bursary for the Arts was established to encourage the local artistic community. Referring to the bursary, Mrs. Farndale stated "Art in its many forms is a constant inspira- tion. The pleasure that it gives daily is immeasur- able. It is important to me that people are given an opportunity to capture a dream and pursue their creative ability." Application forms are available at the library and the township offices in Port Perry, as well as at local schools and colleges. The deadline for submitting applications is March 15 each year at the library. Applicants may wish to take a workshop, attend summer school or. take a college or university course.
