PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 26, 2000 - § Cartwright principal gets creamed Organizers revving up for fifth annual Epsom Indy June 24 The green flag will fall on another race day in Epsom June 24, when the fifth annual Epsom Indy soap box derby is held. The event is expected to attract more than 50 participants, says race co-ordi- nator Gail Kerry. "We're getting ready for it," she said. "It should be another good year. We had as many as 75 (entrants) two years ago, but generally we get around 50 or a few more." The Indy started five years ago as a fun activity for the community planned by the Epsom-Utica Church, but has now been taken on as a village event, said Mrs. Kerry. Participants must construct their own car, and it must pass an inspection dur- ing a registration session at Utica Farm Equipment (620 Durham Rd. 21) on June 17. Races will run from 10 a.m. to noon on June 24. Entrants must be registered in one of three categories: Primary, ages 6-9; Junior, ages 10-14; and Senior, 15 years and older. All Indy cars must have a solid floor, front bumper and a hood designed to protect the drivers' legs. The front of the car must be strong enough to support the weight of the car at the start of the race and must extend beyond the front wheels. The car must be a maximum of 36 inches wide or a minimum of 28 inches; 32 inches is recommended. No engines or power systems of any kind are permitted and drivers must wear helmets.
