- ERT RIN PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2000 - 13 Resident writes in with safety concerns Council considers changes for 7A By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The provincial Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has been informed of safety concems around the intersection of : Water St., Hwy. 7A and Camegie St. in Port Perry, a meeting of the township works committee was told Monday mom- ing. , With the MTO preparing to upgrade Hwy. 7A from Water St. to the Island Rd. this summer, a Port Perry resident says this would be an ideal time to correct traffic problems at the Camegie St.-7A intersection. In a recent letter to the township, Nancy Thompson says the traffic signal lights at Water St. and the highway should be revised to control traffic at Carnegie St. just a few feet to the west. ¥ She says eastbound traffic on 7A should be forced by the signal lights to come to a stop west of the Camegie St. intersection, to allow motorists to make a safer exit from Camegie. She suggests that a left turn lane from Carnegie might help to correct the problems as well. As most residents are aware, exiting from Camegie St. onto Highway 7A is nothing short of a nightmare, especially during peak traffic times like Friday afternoons. Ward 2 rep Ken Carruthers said Monday it has become an "almost impossible situation on Friday evenings." He said drivers become very impatient, cutting each other off, and drivers eastbound on the highway do not want to let drivers exit from Carnegie onto 7A. Township works superintendent Rob Rodgers told the meeting the ministry has been informed of these issues. He said there is a chance MTO will do some "cosmetic" repaving of Hwy. 7A from Manchester to Water St. this sum- mer if there is enough money in the budget. Ms Thompson says in her letter the curb cuts on the south side of the highway in front of the plaza should be replaced with proper barrier curbs or some kind of steel fence. Some motorists, seeing the cuts in the curb, believe they can enter the plaza parking lot, and in doing so are putting the safety of pedestrians on the sidewalk in serious danger, she said. Mr. Rodgers said the curb cuts will be fixed this summer by the MTO. Many local residents believe the stretch of Hwy. 7A from Camegie St. east to the causeway has become quite unsafe because of the ever-increasing volume of traffic. brought to you by.... TOP 10 LS .
