18 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 2000 Writer's Circle plans special 'Breakfast Dialogue' In a departure from the traditional "speaker" presentation, on Saturday, July 8, The Writers' Circle of Durham Region (WCDR)" will celebrate the vibrant, cre- ative local writing circles from across Durham. At this special Writers' and Editors' Breakfast Dialogue, the floor will be opened up to representatives of those circles to share short segments of their writing with the entire group. You'll hear everything from poetry to humour, and you'll be inspired by the high calibre of writers who so generously share their work with each other on a reg- ular bask. ; Under the umbrella of WCDR, several smaller writing circles provide venues for writers to gather and read and critique their pieces in arder to hone their skills and provide support, motivation and inspiration to each other. Currently, there are local circles oper- ating in Pickering, Port Perry, Uxbridge, Oshawa and Whitby. Whether you're a long standing member, a brand new mem- ber or someone thinking about attending a Writers' and Editors' Breakfast Dialogue for the first time, this is a must attend meeting. You'll want to be there early at Grisanti's Casual Italian Restaurant, 1615 Dundas E. (at Thickson Road) in Whitby on Saturday, July 8. The meeting runs from 8:30 to Il am. : The cost for the breakfast is $8 for members and $12 for guests. Seating is limited and catering arrangements need to be confirmed by the Thursday prior - so call Yvonne Hess at (905) 665-1068 before July 6 to reserve your spot. Just a reminder - WCDR does not meet in August. Fall Workshops WCDR has an exciting roster of fall workshops scheduled. On Sept. 23, Dorothea Helms offers "Getting the Word Out; Ad Writing for Print and Radio" at the Pickering Central Library Auditorium from 10am. to4 p.m. In addition to defining advertising and how it fits into a company's marketing plan, participants will learn the parts of a print ad, how to write advertorials and radio ads, where visuals fit in, how copy- writers interact with clients and agencies, how intemet advertising differs from tra- ditional media, what to charge for copy- writing, etc. In October, enjoy two brand new work- shops that are sure to fill up quickly. On Saturday, Oct. 7, well known Canadian film, television and theatre actor Neil Crone presents "Creativity Through Improvisation." He will lead participants through a series of fast paced exercises designed to shake loose stagnant brain cells and rearrange them in new pattems. Stuck? Blocked? Bored with the same old tried and true ways of approaching your creative explorations? Come out to this morning of on the spot improvising (and " laughter) and learn techniques that will help you break through creative stagna- tion. This workshop has a maximum capacity of 20 participants, so sign up early to prevent disappointment. Poetry lovers won't want to miss "Flying Balloons: An Idiosyncratic Exploration of Poetry" presented by Lucy Brennan on Saturday, Oct. 28. This invigo- rating day will include a discussion of poems and their history. Participants are asked to bring their favourite poem including poet and date, to broaden and personalize the scope of this exploration. The afternoon will encompass an inter- active workshop format with participants creating and sharing poetry.
