Bo * T& AEE by (| : 3 A Association to mark re-opening of soccer fields with celebration June 24 The Scugog Soccer Association will mark the re-opening of its main fields on Old Simcoe Rd. this weekend with a tour- nament for all ages. While play has resumed at the main pitches for almost a month now, Association officials opted to hold off on their grand re-opening ceremonies until this Saturday, June 24. The event will celebrate the reconfiguring of the local fields, which began last spring and was finally completed last fall. "We completely bull- dozed the fields a year ago and leveled and re-seeded OPEN YEAR ROUND SATURDAY 8:00-4 :00 00-4:00 i583 them," said Association president Mike Lorish last week. Things, however, didn't go as planned, causing a bit of a delay in getting the fields back in action. "Some of the places didn't grow in right, so we had to fix that. But, for now, we'll have all the teams back on the main fields for the first time since September 1998. During the reconfigura- tion, officials changed around the design of the fields, enabling them to increase the number of full-size pitches to five. The cost was split between the Scugog Soccer Association and the municipality, with the township picking up the majority of the cost. "It will allow us more flexibility when it comes to scheduling fields," Mr. Lorish says, noting there are a total of 60 teams and 900 players ranging from four-years-old to adult playing the game locally. "Last year, logistically, it was a nightmare. We had teams playing at the local schools, at the churches... anywhere that was fairly flat we had them playing. The opening cere- monies will kick off the day-long tournament at 9 a.m. An old-timers game is scheduled for noon.
