"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST n, 2000 - 21 re ES NATL pra ee EF Rn a A Br eathtaking work marks the arrival of an exciting new filmmaker in Taymor * From Page 9 Close to the throne, Tamora now moves to quench her thirst for revenge against Titus. Her sons, Chiron and Demetrius, rape and muti- late the gentle Lavinia, the beloved daughter of Titus, and murder her husband. Aaron, in support of Tamora, frames the sons of Titus for murder, and the heads of Titus' sons are sent to him after the deaths. Seeking now his own revenge, Titus learns it was the sons of Tamora who destroyed his daughter, and acting the part of a mad man, carefully begins the process in which he will unleash on Tamora a havoc unlike any she has ever encountered. Outwitting her, he captures her sons, and in a stunning finale, extracts his vengeance on their mother, quite literally, feeding her sons to her. Taymor was very clear in making the film that loyalty to the text was of the utmost importance, and her screenplay is incredibly accurate to the play. Further to that was her work in bending time, giving us a Shakespearean work that resonates with contempo- rary dress and morals. "In the theatre produc- tion, I directed the actors to find a balance between the heightened choreogra- phy and naturalism," says Taymor. "In the film I want- ed them to make their char- acters and action natural without sacrificing the poet- DURHAM REGION THE REGIONAL MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING AN APPLICATION TO AMEND THE DURHAM REGION OFFCIAL PLAN other non-abutting farm parcels. If you have - any questions or comments regarding the proposed Amendment, ry. This led Taymor to a three-week rehearsal peri- od before a frame of film was shot, which seems to me to have liberated the actors with the text, allow- ing them to create sharply defined characters. Far too often in Shakespearean adaptations to film, the actors seem ill at ease.with the language, thereby strip- ping themselves of the chance to own the lines and create the character. In Titus, the language flows with absolute beauty because the actors are com- fortable with what they are saying, are listening to one another, but most impor- tant, know exactly what they are saying. Anthony Hopkins deliv- ers an astonishing perfor- mance as Titus, capturing - the anguish of a father seek- ing revenge for foul deeds against his precious daugh- ter, but also plagued by the guilt he set the entire nightmare in motion. Hopkins is an actor who throws himself into every role with great abandon, and his work in this film is boldly brilliant in every frame. Equally fine is Jessica Lange as the schem- ing and vicious Tamora. Only when presented with his child do we see any form of compassion and human- ity within this seething, hateful beast. Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus ends in an orgy of blood and mayhem, and while Taymor is loyal to that carnage, her last image in the film is a soaring moment of hope for human- ity. Titus is an ignored mas- terpiece that may be the finest film made from a Shakespearean play; | can- not believe it failed to find an audience. This breath- taking work is gleaming with remarkable performances, nightmarish imagery, revenge, betrayal, savage violence, and finally hope.
