FRIDAY, AUGUST n, 2000 a Tearing up the track at Mosport Rookie Darren Kearnan's burst onto the racing scene in his #45 Chevrolet this year By John "Wally" Nesbitt From Comer Five When Darren Kearnan climbs out of his race car and takes off his hel- met, he tends to get a lot of second looks. d That's probably because this rac- ing driver is a very youthful looking 17-year-old. But don't let appearances deceive you, when the helmet goes back on and the engine fires up, the kid is a racer through and through. Darren burst onto the racing scene last year at the wheel of a Mosport Speedway ThunderCar. By the end of the 1999 season, the Burketon resident had earned nine heat wins, two feature victories and finished the year in fifth place in the overall points standings. This year, Darren is piloting the #45 open-wheeled Modified car at Gun Owners, Get Your Licence NOW! Sern ay Ba ees go BEL mite ite For more information, assistance or forms: 1§) Cheaper! This pure racing machine is powered by a Chevrolet 350 c.i.d. engine which produces approximately 310 horsepower and is capable of pushing the 2700 pound car to a top speed of 110 miles per hour around Mosport's half mile oval. "There is a tremendous difference between the ThunderCar and this year's Modified," explains the dis- armingly reserved Kearnan. "The Modified's handling is similar to that of a racing go-kart but with the extra horsepower, this car is something that you have to stay on top of, because it can get away from you pretty quickly!" Not only is Kearnan subjected to a steep learning curve when it comes to his car, he must also contend with, and compete in, what is arguably Mosport's most competitive division." Past champions Darrin Wrigglesworth Simpler! A New One-Page Form and Graham Brown plus perennial winners Dwight Brown, Larry Jackson and Rod Sauder are all usually near the front of the field and young Darren doesn't look out of place going wheel to wheel with these Modified veterans. "So far, I haven't received any grief from the other drivers," contin- ues the series rookie." | know that if | run hard and run clean, I can race with the lead pack. And although | don't like to follow anyone on the track, I know that if | keep my eyes open, | can watch the other guys and | can learn something from them every time out." A big piece of Kearnan's racing education has come from his father Carl, who not only provided the inspi- ration for his son to race, but is also the team engine builder and trans Turn to Page 25 ve aed torn PO, seis PHEERON APPLICATION FOR A LICENCE UNDER THE FIREARMS ACT {for Individuals aged 18 and over) ATTENTION 8a PORNESS. Tryouts for the Pulverizers' squad were held earlier in the summer, with more than 20 squirt (aged 9-10) level players from the Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association taking part, says manager Rick Lea. After final cuts, 12 local boys were selected for the squad from local teams such as Lake Scugog Lumber, Hank's Pastries, Pineridge Sports, and Brian's Towing. The double-knockout tournament will be held on Aug. 12-13. "We talked about doing this in our (executive) meetings earlier in the year, and when we held tryouts we had a great turnout," said Mr. Lea! "The boys are pretty good and they're really excited about this. This will probably be the first really com- petitive experience they've had in ball." The Pulverizers will compete against squads from Paris, Elmira, Newmarket, Napanee, Stittsville, and Walkerton. Helping coach the squad at the tournament this weekend will be Dave Gilson, Dane Young, and Greg Isaacs.
