Many Durham teachers have been with- holding extracurricular par- ticipation for two years in protest over added in-class time. Mr. Hargrove said in an interview with The Weekend Star that he and Durham _ 985-8552 * 3M Scotchguard * Broadloom Steam| Upholstery Hearing , | ,se Rugs 852-6711 his union fully support teachers, and "will stay in close contact with the lead- ers (of the Ontario .Secondary School Teachers Federation) to give support, and | would hope that the rest of the labour move- ment would do the same." Mr. Hargrove called threats by the govemment to force teacher participa- tion in extracurricular activi- ties "absolutely despicable. "If, they can force a pro- fessional group like teach- ers to work, unpaid, after their regular work day, then who is next, and what part of REPLA WINDOWS 8 DOORS for labour is safe?" said Mr. Hargrove. "The message | gave the teachers is that they will have the total support of the CAW," he said. Teachers voted 71 per cent in favour of giving their union a strike mandate. Calls to the OSSTF District 13 offices Wednesday for details on that vote were unanswered at press time. Mr. Hargrove, who attended the meeting at the same time that CAW mem- bers in Oshawa were staging a wildcat walkout at an Oshawa car plant, said the government has targeted teachers. "They are an easy group to target," he said. "They have been on the front lines of the fight against this gov- emment's labour practices by themselves, and we are simply letting them know that we are behind them." When asked if he had full membership support for the move, Mr. Hargrove said, "once there is a public forum on the issues our members will see, and agree with us." Mr. Hargrove would not say what form support from the CAW would take, except to say, "it will depend on what - their leadership decides to do, and we will stay in close touch with them." Negotiations between the region's 1,300 high school teachers and the Durham District School Board are ongoing, but a statement from the OSSTF said "a signed agreement is unlikely under the new pro- visions of Bill 74." Sources close to the union say that no strike action is likely to take place before the beginning of classes on Sept. 5. ment: The Council of the Township of Scugog and the Games Organizing Committee send out a warm and sincere thank you to all the residents .of:Scugog who volunteered their time to assist with the organization and running of the Ontario Summer Games 2000.
