Local teens visit Alberta as part of 4-H exchange program Visiting the wild, wild West By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star An exchange program has given two teenagers from differ- ent provinces the opportunity this summer to see parts of Canada they've never visited before. Ken Hunter, 16, of Greenbank, and nine others from this area recently took part in a 4-H Club exchange visit to Alberta. During Ken's visit to Two Hills, a town 150 km north- east of Edmonton, he stayed with John Babiuk, 17, a fellow club member. . The Ontario contingency flew to Alberta on Aug. 2, and stayed until August 10. All were billet- ed out at homes of people involved in the exchange pro- gram. A screening process for host families was done so part- ners were well matched. Although all the participants had to each pay a $188 registra- tion fee, Connections Canada, a program of the Department of Canadian Heritage, paid their airfare tab. This was Ken's first time away without his family. He stayed with John on his family's 2,000- acre beef ranch. Highlights of Ken's trip out West included a rodeo, a visit to a working muse- um which depicted life in a Ukrainian village centuries ago, and a shopping trek to the famous West Edmonton Mall. Of course, a trip to Alberta meant a visit to an oil refinery, and viewing the majestic Rockies in the Jasper National Park. "I loved the rodeo, and the mountains were awesome," said Ken. "I also bought a pair of cowboy boots, something I've always wanted." And now it's time for Ken to return the hospitality to his Western friend. On Aug.14 John and nine other westemers and their chaperone landed at Pearson International airport.
