It takes time, thought and discussion however, to help your chil- dren choose activities that will be most beneficial to them. A new web site, dedicated to sports participation among children in Ontario, offers parents several steps to ensure their child's needs are met when they are ready to join a program. Excerpts from the site suggest that you: e Make sure your child wants to be involved in the designated sport. A child who is forced to participate is more likely to quit. * Make sure your child is ready for the sport, both physically, and emotional- ly, to play competitively and to learn the rules. Children mature at differ- ent levels and a delay doesn't mean they won't excel once they are ready. * Avoid early specializa- tion in one sport. Children who specialize too soon may miss out on develop- ing a wider range of skills important to life-long sports enjoyment. Intense training starting at an early age (under 12 years old) can also put your child at risk of developing overuse injuries in the long term. ® Check up on the coach's background and approach. Make sure thet he or she is well-trained] and has a healthy, child-centred approach to coaching. Ask the coach what will be emphasized in the sports program. Does the coach think winning is more important than having fun, playing fair, developing skills, etc.?
