McClelland Weekend Star Members of Scugog council are dismayed that the provincial government plans to hand enforce- . ment of new policies for nutrient management on Ontario's farms over to the. municipalities. "We do 'not have the staff to enforce this. It sim- ply will not happen if we have to enforce it," said Mayor Doug Moffatt as the controversial topic came under discussion at coun- cil's Aug. 28 meeting. The mayor volunteered to draft a response stating council's position on enforcement, and send it Moffatt off to provincial agriculture minister Ernie Hardeman. . The province intends to force Ontario farmers to regulations governing the safe handling and disposal of manure and other nutri- ent materials, such as fer- tilizers. That's fine with Scugog council, but to ask small townships such as this one to take on the time-con- suming and costly job of enforcement is foolish and passing the huck, say members of council. The mayor said most municipalities do not have staff members with the expert knowledge to take on. this responsibility, or the staff to effectively enforce new regulations. Hospital swamped with water tests By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A dramatic increase in the number of water sam- ples being dropped off daily for testing at the Port Perry hospital has forced officials to change the way they do busi- ness. Staff at Lakeridge Health Port Perry are swamped with their own work, and can't continue to take time away from their duties to locate and retrieve test results for local homeowners, says hospital spokesperson Linda Robinson. As of today, anyone dropping off a sample should include a postage stamp with the accompa- nying information card and bottle. Results will be mailed directly to their home. If a stamp is not for- warded, it will be assumed that the home- owner will pick up test results at the Peterborough Public Health Laboratory. In the past, staff might receive up to 20 water samples a week, and were happy to hand out test results when they arrived, said Mrs. Robinson. But recent scares about water quality have brought about a huge . increase in the number of samples being sub- mitted at the hospital. Staff have not been able to keep up with the demand. "In the past the hospi- tal would get two or three samples a day for testing; now they're getting more than 80 samples some days," said = Mrs. Robinson. "There has really been a dramatic increase in the number of tests, and staff at the hospitals cannot do their regular work when they have to locate and look up test results." Staff at Port Perry's hospital will still accept samples at the laboratory Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m, and on Fridays from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Test results should be mailed out, or available at the Peterborough lab, in about five days. 15350 Old Simcoe Rd (905) 985-73 ) Bw 4 Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens Wholesale Brand Name Factory Outle UNDER CONSTRUCTION Port Perry
