One of the board's largest carriers, Stock Transport, has been virtually shut out of school busing in Ajax and Pickering. A first-time bidder for school transport, Northstar Transit, came up the winner, landing a one- year contract worth $57,000. Total cost for transporta- tion in the coming year will top $16 million, with $9 mil- lion going to regular trans- port and special education students transport nearing $7 million. No major changes in transport in Scugog and Uxbridge are due, with pre- vious carriers retaining their routes for the most part. The same is true in Oshawa and Whitby. Oshawa trustee Jane Weist - a former employee of Stock Transport - said she worried about the possibili- ty of layoffs at Stock. "I was quite concemed over. Stock losing drivers, having worked there myself," she said. "I felt myself sorrowing over this." Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew echoed concerns raised by Pickering trustee Ruth Anne Shedlich over whether Northstar, which operates busing services in Peel and the Ottawa- Carleton boards of educa- tion, will be able to handle the job in Durham. "I hope that we have guarantees in place that they can carry out the con- tract as described," Mrs. Drew said to finance and transportation superinten- dent Ron Trbovich. Mr. Trbovich assured trustees that contracts have performance clauses that must be adhered to. Mr. Trbovich also announced that a new call centre for parents with ques- tions or concemns over bus- ing of students is in the works. Bus routes are now avail- able from area schools.
