Ron Trbovich, board Superintendent for Finance, said the testing program will be in place by the end of September, and will replace the already stringent testing done on all school water supplies in the region. The new program, which will include month- ly tests for microbiological problems and other tests to assure water quality, will cost the board an additional $50,000 a year. Pickering Trustee Paul Crawford questioned Mr. Trbovich on the need for the testing. "l guess what I'm asking," Mr. Crawford said, "is, without the recent media coverage of things like Walkerton, would we be doing this?" Mr. Trbovich said it's much better for the board to be safe, than sorry. "When it comes to the safety of the drinking water for our children, the cost-is small and not significant," he said. "This testing is over and above what is required... it's in fact an extra step. It will allow us to know of a problem quick- ly, and it is money well spent." Mr. Trbovich said that after problems with water quality at one board site last year, his staff set about creating a screening process that sets standards above those required by the province. The testing system will be used at all schools, with an emphasis on schools with their own wells, or on smaller municipal well sys- tems. The program will be complete and opera- tional by the end of the month. Director of Education Grant Yeo said he did not know why the Ministry of Education had not yet come out with regulations for school wells. "You would have to ask them; | believe they are working on something," he said. There is no word if there will be provincial funds to help school boards upgrade their water testing, similar to funding being given to small municipalities. aru CHRIS HALL/WEEKEND STAR GREAT CHILI COOK-OFF: Plans are underway and contestants are keeping their secret recipes close to their chest, as the Great Chili Cook-off day approaches in Blackstock.
