Running at the same time will be the "Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest." The pumpkin prize will be awarded, not necessarily to the biggest pumpkin but to the person who has the greatest num- ber of pledges plus the weight of their pumpkin. You don't have to have a pumpkin to enter. It is real- ly simple. If you bring in $1,000 of pledges then you will have a 1000 kg pump- kin. It is to your advantage pumpkin This has not been a good summer for growing these mammoth pump- kins. Whale size will be dif- ficult to find, but there will be some big brutes. Local grower and fertilizer spe- cialist Colin Kemp has been quoted as saying, "It will take two men and a really strong woman to lift my pumpkin, plus I will have several hundred if not thousands of dollars in pledges." The farmers of the com- munity have been quiet. They just don't seem to be good at growing things that aren't planted by machines, caressed with chemicals and harvested early. "Not much return on a pumpkin," a local dairy farmer has been quoted. Bob Hoogeveen, also a dairy farmer, says, "1 will have a back breaker of a pumpkin ready for the Sept. 16 event." Local politicians have also been challenged. Alex Shepherd, Liberal MP, John O'Toole, Conservative MPP, Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt, Scugog Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden and all of the township councillors are expected to enter their pumpkins, whether they have one or not.
