4 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2000 New route in place for this year's Terry fox Run By Rik Davie Weekend Star The route will change slightly for this year's Terry Fox Run in Port Perry. Organizing committee member Leo Plue said the route will change for the longer leg of this year's run, so that participants don't have to deal with crossing the busy Hwy. 7A. He also said that interest in the run is as high as ever. "This year | have more and more people around town coming up to me and talking about it," said Mr. Plue. "If that's any indica- tion, | expect it to be a great year." The run begins in Palmer Park on Sept. 17 with 8 a.m. registration. The nation-wide event raises money in honour of Terry Fox, whose 1980 Marathon of Hope began what has become a long tradition of fundraising. Terry Fox died in 1981. And the run that bears his name now takes place across Canada, the U.S. and in 50 other countries. "We like to try for one dollar for every res- ident in Scugog," said Mr. Plue. "That's about 18,000 people, and last year we raised about $21,000, so we are pleased and all set to try and top that this year." Mr. Plue said that there is something for everyone at the run. "There is a 1, 5 and 10 km run," he said. "But even if you do not run, come on down, make a donation in person, or sponsor a runner. It's a great get together no matter how you participate." The run begins at Palmer Park, then takes participants along the Birdseye Park trail. Participants cross Simcoe St. to Kellet St, then go to the fairgrounds. People taking the 5k course will then follow Old Simcoe St. south to Queen St., and back to the park. Runners going for the 10 k event will head north on Old Simcoe, to the municipal soc- cer fields, then double back to Queen St. and home to Palmer Park. Participants are encouraged to run, walk, cycle, or skate the routes. They gather pledges before taking part in the event.
