"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2000 - 3 Curling season delayed; CORRECTION McMillen running in Ward 3 ice plant breaks down By Chris Hall Port Perry Star There will be no action at the Port Perry Curling Club this fall, as members scramble to replace aging ice-making equipment. Just days away from playing their first end last week, club members dis- covered an area on the ice pad that wasn't freezing properly. Refrigeration techni- cians were called in. They told club officials that the 42-year-old ice machine will have to be replaced. "It finally let go. We were only one day away from starting to curl," Roger Moase, the club's past-president, + said Tuesday afternoon. A small pinhole was found in one of the refrig- eration pipes under the ice surface by technicians, "he said. Because of the strict regulations govern- ing old ammonia-based ice equipment, the entire refrigeration system will have to be replaced. It is expected to cost more than $100,000, and up to $150,000, said Mr. Moase. "That's quite a bit; we've got some funds built up over the years, but we're going to have to get together and get some funds raised," he said. "We're going to have to decide if we want to go ahead with just the mini- mum required and finish the rest next summer, or if we're going to do the whole thing now." The Port Perry Curling Club generally runs three schedules each year, each with seven games. Club executives are hoping to be back on the ice for the annual Boxing Day bon- spiel, which would give them enough time to com- plete the remaining two schedules. As for replacing the refrigeration equipment, which has been in use since the club was built more than 40 years ago, the club will tum to its members, the community and township for help. Drunk driver is arrested A Coboconk man was arrested for drunk driving last week after he was reported to police by a passing motorist. Durham Police were given a description of the driver and vehicle by a motorist on a cell phone who noticed the accused driving in an erratic and unsafe manner, according to a report. Officers caught up with the man in the area of Simcoe Rd. and Castle Harbour just north of Port Perry around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. He failed a roadside breathalyzer test, as well as two tests back at the police station. As a result, a 37-year- old Coboconk man has been charged with one count of exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit. "When we have the ice in there, it's put to use pretty much throughout the entire day. We'll have to find a way."
