Election results were made official Wednesday morning, 'and showed the incumbent with a total of 6,250 votes. Mr. Hall, who held the mayor's office for three terms before losing to Mr. Moffatt in 1997, collected 2,271. It was thought that the challenger would receive strong support in the Port Perry area south of Queen St. In another interesting race, veteran councillor Ken Carruthers defeated Bobbie Drew in the contest for regional councillor. Mr. Carruthers, who has served on council for the past nine'years, collected 4,663 votes, compared to Mrs. Drew's 3,644. ~ This will be the first time in more than a dozen years that Mrs. Drew has not represented the township in some capacity. She held the Scugog trustee position with the District Durham School Board for the past 12 years. Other results: - aln Ward 1, Larry Corrigan hung on to defeat his only challenger, Harold Westerman, with a total of 991 votes. Mr. Westerman collected 775. a Long-time councillor Marilyn Pearce returned to council Monday night, when she received 1,273 votes, easily outdis- tancing Doug Harris (479) and Peter Utnans (162) in the Ward 2 contest. a Incumbent Ward 3 Councillor Jim McMillen also kept his seat at the coun- cil table as he handed challenger Jeff Brown his third straight election defeat. Mr. McMillen tallied 819 votes, com- pared to Mr. Brown's 239. a Cartwright voters also opted to return their incumbent. David Dietlein easily took Ward 4, defeating challenger Joyce Kelly 1,300 to 662. a In the most hotly contested race, Paul Michel emerged the winner in Ward 5 Monday night with 630 votes. He faced a challenge from Charlie Norris (486); Dave Robinson (278); Helen Newlove (188), and Martin Olenroot (46). a And in a nail-biter, Martin Demmers hung on to defeat Carolyn Haugen in the battle for public school trustee. In what was the closest race of the election, Mr. Demmers collected 2,734 votes; Mrs. Haugen received 2,649, just 85 votes behind. John D. Smith finished third, receiving 1,371 votes. Approximately 16,600 people were eligible to vote in the municipal elec- tion. A total of 8,617 cast their ballots, resulting in almost a 52 per cent voter turnout. All numbers were made official by Scugog Township staff on Nov. 15. The new council will be sworn in on Dec. 4.
