"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2000-15 Donated hair helps cancer patients By Heather McCrae Weekend Star For years Jill Howsam has kept her hair long. But when she learned that her hair could be donated to help make a wig 'for children undergo- ing chemotherapy, she was all set to get it cut and make the donation. For years Jill's mother Janet has been involved in several fundraising events to fight cancer. This year when Ms Howsam won a free makeover during the annual Run For A Cure, Jill accompanied her mom to the salon in Peterborough. . "When 1 was at the salon with mom, the staff said that if | ever thought of getting my hair cut | could donate it to Continental Hair For Kids, a company in Toronto that makes human hair wigs for kids undergoing chemotherapy," said Jill. Recently she made a trip to Anthony's Salon in Uxbridge, where she had hair stylist Tony luele cut her hair. Having not had her hair cut since she was 7, Jill, now 20, said she 'was a bit apprehensive; but she likes the new look. Seasonal themes for Garden Club At the Nov. 7 meeting _ of Pine Ridge Garden Club, members were busy making wreaths at a workshop led by Nellie Reuter. A very interesting and sociable evening. The Dec. 5 meeting is the club's + family Christmas pot luck sup- per with entertainment. The annual election of officeis and awards will also be held. There will also be a craft show and sale. The monthly compe- tition "Christmas Cheer" is a fresh arrangement in three wine glasses. This will be our last meeting until March and we wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Please join us at 6:30 p.m. at the Nestleton Hall. For more informa- tion please call Shirley Love at 986-5330. cr ANAL ANE NRA 'A way we can all help', says donor "I trusted Tony," she said. Cancer is all too famil- iar to Jill, who has lost a lot of relatives to the dis- ease. "I just shudder at the thought of all the young children being treated for cancer. | thought if I could help them look better and enjoy a better outlook, then I was all for donating my hair," she said. Hair used for the wigs must be natural. It cannot be permed or coloured, and must be eight inches or more in length. The hair must be braid- ed or in a pony tail, then placed in a ziplock bag and mailed in a brown envelope to The Centennial Hair For Kids Program, 92 1/2 Avenue Road, Toronto M5R 2H2. Human hair wigs sell for up to $250, depending on the length and color. Since learning about this program and cutting Jill's hair Mr. luele now says he will cut anyone's - hair for free if they will donate their locks to this program. He will keep the hair and send it to Toronto. "It's just another way we can all help," said Jill.
