30 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2000 Little Predators lose 6-4 and earn 2-2 tie vs rival Tyke Predators lose, tie Cannington in recent series The Predators played three games this past week with the first game being an away game against Ops. The boys had the opposition hemmed in their own end the whole first period but only came away with a 1-1 tie. Andrew Van Camp, who is handling the puck well, got Port's first goal assisted by Brody Anderson's smart bank pass off the boards. Dale Edwards, in his first game in goal, shut down Ops the rest of the game including a spectacu- lar breakaway save when he got his glove on a high shot and sent the puck flying over the net. The floodgates finally opened in the second period as the Predators went on to score four more goals for a 5-1 victory. Josh Malyon received a good pass from Stewart Ct. Cyr and skated around the defenceman and fired low, hard shot into the open side. Travis Mackey, who 'has been going hard to the net "and creating a lot of chances scored next on a backhand. Jonathan Brouse picked up this assist when he kept it in at the blue line and smartly passed it to the net. Jonathan Griffen, who was firing the puck low and hard all game scored the Predator's fourth goal when the puck found its way through traffic. On Saturday, Port played their first game of the year - against Cannington and they had their hands full from the Aaron opening face off. It was all Cannington early as the Predators found themselves in a rare 3-0 deficit. The boys han- dled it well and battled all game before surrendering 6-4 to the visitors. Travis Mackey played well in goal as he faced a well rounded Cannington team. To keep his team in the game, Travis made a great skate save and later stuck the pad out to stop the big Cannington forward as he tried to cut across the crease. Josh Malyon got Port on the scoreboard in the first period when he scored from the slot with a quick shot assisted by Stewart Ct. Cyr. Going into the third period down 5-1 didn't stop the Tykes as they outscored their oppo- nents 3-1 in the final frame. Andrew Van Camp got things going for Port when he made some nice dekes, took a shot and then got his own rebound. Josh Malyon then scored his sec- ond goal of the game when he went around the net, came out front and fired for a short hand- ed goal. Reid Stewart kept the game interesting when he shoved in an open puck as the Predators kept fighting to the end. The boys found themselves chasing Cannington forwards all night as Dale Edwards, Stephen Hall, Brody Anderson, Nicholas Shinas and Nick Mason all made impressive checks. The highlight of the game was when Brody Anderson lost his stick and con- tinued to move the puck through several Cannington players by using his soccer skills. The home and home series continued Sunday with an enter- taining game at Cannington. The boys were ready this time and they came out flying and out played Cannington by a wide margin. Port was around the opponent's net all game howev- er a strong netminder allowed the score to end in a 2-2 tie. Andrew Van Camp made sev- eral good rushes with his shots all turned away by the goalie except one big, fat rebound that Dale Edwards shoved into the empty net. The Predators sec- ond goal came when Josh Malyon came down the wrong side with a quick burst of speed and put it between the netmin- ders pads. Reid Stewart, who played a great defensive game, was the one to get the puck up to Josh. Josh almost won the game in the dying seconds on one of his rushes but to the disappoint- ment of the screaming fans the puck wouldn't go in. Cannington also had some late chance but Jonathan Griffin shut the door on the home team. Kyle Schweda, playing his first game on the point looked sharp and made some smart passes to his forwards. Trevor Grant was a rock on defences and several times stopped Cannington in their tracks. Nick Mason did a good job standing up at the blue line and keeping the puck in the oppo- nent's end. The Tykes next trav- el to Haliburton for a game on Saturday, Dec. 9.
