Mayor Moffatt announced in his address last Monday that he will call a meeting of represen- tatives of all northern municipalities on Dec. 2| to discuss possible amal- gamation scenarios. Amalgamation of rural townships was a hot topic during the recent munici- pal election. Mayor Moffatt said Scugog council would be meeting with their coun- terparts from Brock and Uxbridge on Dec. 21 to dis- cuss and map out strate- gies. In her inaugural address - which was attended by Mayor Moffatt - Mayor O'Connor said she won't be there. "I will just let you know now that as for the Dec. 21 meeting, | have chosen not to attend that meeting," she said. Taken a little aback at the mayor's off-the-cuff remark, Mayor Moffatt said jokingly: "That's a prob- lem, we were going to hold it here." After the meeting Mayor O'Connor elaborated on her decision not to attend a meeting so early in her council's term. "I think it's important that the council has time to meet and find out where we are with proposed amalgamation ideas," Mayor O'Connor said. "| have two new members on council, and they have to be brought up to speed on what our thoughts and pro- posals on it have been. It's only fair to the two mem- bers, as well as to other new council members in Scugog and Brock, that they have the time to inform themselves before we sit to discuss such an important issue." Mayor Moffatt said that while he was disappoint- ed, amalgamation must be dealt with as soon as pos- sible.
