2 - "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2001 Ski hill owner calls for |g improvements to bad stretch of Lakeridge By Rik Davie Weekend Star When firefighters and police were called to a multi-vehicle accident on Regional Rd. 23 at the entrance to Dagmar Ski Resort Tuesday afternoon, Gabor Marton said enough is enough. The owner and general manager of Dagmar, Mr. Marton has been arguing for a wider road area and lower speed limits at the entrance to his ski hill 'since the 1970s. E The entrance for the public to the ski and snow board hills is located at the bottom of a small valley with two steep hills on either side of it. It's on Regional Road 23 also known as Lakeridge Rd., between Chalk i.ake Rd. and the Pickering, Uxbridge and Scugog Townlines. "I had a very close call at the entrance myself a -couple of years ago," Mr. Marton said Tuesday. "The width of the road and a turn lane are something that were overlooked when the road was improved in the 1970s, and | have been asking both Uxbridge Township and regional government to do something for a long time." school bus full of youngsters went into a ditch after the driver misjudged the narrow entry way. "They (government officials) have said that I would have to pay part of it, and I am willing to at some degree," Mr. Marton said. "But you know, I pay close to $60,000 a year in business taxes, and all I am asking is that some of that money be reinvested in public safety. "We have accidents at this entry year after year and the police do what they can to control speeders, but they cannot be everywhere," said Mr. Marton. "I want the township to do something before we have a tragedy here." Mr. Marton said he was told 10 years ago that the cost of widening and improving the entrance would be $35,000. "I don't imagine it's getting any cheaper," he said. "But there are 100,000 persons visiting this (Dagmar) place each year, and the traffic vol- ume on the road grows every year. Surely for the sake of the public safe- ty this should be seriously looked at." wi ---- \ % Emergency crews responded toa three-vehicle collision on Lakeridge Rd. near the Dagmar ski hill Tuesday afternoon. No one was seriously hurt, but Dagmar's owner is calling for improvements to what he says is a treacherous stretch of road.
