"WEEKEND STAR" Ss FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2001 - 11 "Tobacco: The Truth Hurts" is the theme from Jan. 14-20 Durham's health department marks Non-Smoking Week Durham Region Health Department will celebrate National Non-Smoking Week, Jan. 14 to 20, by pro- ting this years theme, "Tobacco: The Truth Hurts," through a number of events and activities planned for area schools, workplaces and out in the general community. As' part of Weedless Wednesday activities on lan. 17, Health Department Dental staff will be hosting one-hour information ses- sions entitled "In Your Face" designed to teach Grade 4 students across Durham Region about the effects of smoking on the mouth. Presentations will 'be"made at selected schools across the region. "We're very excited about our National Non- Smoking Week activities," says Bev Billings, a public health nurse with the Health' Department. "Staff will be participating in a nuniber of activities across Durham Region to educate residents about the dan- gers of tobacco smoke." According to Health Department officials, effects of tobacco smoking continues to be a health concern in Durham Region. Based on a 1999 Health Department survey, 29 per cent of adults 18 years of age and older are current smokers, while 18 per cent of youth aged 12 to 19 years old smoke regularly. But there is also positive news as 74 per cent of Durham Region residents currently live in a smoke- free home, up from 66 per cent in 1996-97, and 120 restaurants in Durham Region are currently smoke-free. Nationally, tobacco smoking is responsible for more than 40,000 deaths each year. According to the Canadian Health Network, adults who live with a smoker have a 30 per cent greater chance of dying of lung cancer and a 20 to 30 per cent increased risk of dying from heart disease. Children regularly exposed to tobacco smoke have a higher risk of devel- oping bronchitis, pneumo- nia, ear infections and asthma. "Although we have made significant gains in Durham Region, smoking still plays a major part in endanger- ing the health of both adults and children." Non-Smoking Week activities will include: Schools o "In Your Face," one- hour information sessions for Grade 4 students across Durham Region on the effects of smoking on the mouth. o Information packages on the dangers of smoking and regulations on control of tobacco to promote smoke-free schools have been sent to all area schools for teachers to use in the classroom. Workplace o A "Smoke-Free for a Day" contest designed to encourage people to refrain from smoking in the workplace and in designat- ed smoking areas. All workplaces in Durham Region are invited to par- ticipate.
