"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, MAY 4, 2001 - 17 Looking to honour youth active in sports, volunteer service and community leadership Nominations sou Ontario youth involved in sports, volunteer service and community leadership programs are being sought as nominees for the sec- ond annual Syl Apps Awards of Excellence, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Tim Hudak announced recently. "These awards recog- nize those individuals active in sports and who reach out to help others," said Hudak. "Everyone nominated should be proud of their accomplish- ments and commitment as volunteers, leaders and role models in their com- munities." "Regional level recipi- ents of the award, in both junior and senior divisions, will qualify for the provin- cial level Syl Apps Awards of Excellence," said Peter North, Provincial Coordinator of the Ontario Office of Community Sport and Recreation Development. "The provincial awards will be presented at a special awards ceremony in Toronto this fall. "The government creat- ed the Syl Apps awards program to throw a spot- light on great kids," said North. "This award recog- nizes their personal achievements and the con- tributions they make to their community." Syl Apps Jr. is proud that an award of excellence has been created in his father's name. "It is such an honour for my father to be recognized in this manner. He knew that everyone benefits when children become involved in athlet- ics and volunteerism and take a leadership role in their communities." Municipalities can nom- inate young people for the award. Nomination forms ght for annual Syl Apps youth award and background informa- tion are being distributed today to all Ontario munic- ipalities. Nominations will close on May 18, 2001. CNIB car rally fundraiser is May 26 The Canadian National Institute for the Blind is hosting its sixth annual car rally on Saturday, May 26 to help raise funds to pro- vide services to over 1,300 blind, visually impaired or deaf-blind clients in Durham Region.
