4 - "WEEKEND STAR" | FRIDAY, MAY4, 2001 Councillors delay decision on herita By Chris Hall Weekend Star Township officials have opted to hold off on mak- ing a decision on the cre- ation of a heritage adviso- ry committee, for the time being. A proposal for a Scugog _ Heritage Advisory Committee (SHAC) was presented to Scugog councillors during the April 23 council meeting. The deputation was led by Carey Nicholson," who Custemer Appreciation Dewy SoM OTTERS spoke on behalf of the Lake Scugog Historical Society's Heritage Committee. The plan calls for the SHAC to work as a compli- mentary resource to the township's Urban and Heritage Guidelines docu- ment, and to assist the municipality in' enforcing regulations in those docu- ments. It was made clear that the SHAC would have no power to initiate or dictate development policies to council, developers or pri- vate citizens. The commit- tee would only serve in an advisory capacity, said Mrs. Nicholson. "You've got something wonderful here, but "there's no one taking care of it," she said in reference to the heritage document. "You've done all the work to get (an advisory com- mittee) in place, you've just never tied the knot." Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, a strong proponent of the town- ship's urban and heritage guideline documents, said that while downtown buildings have kept in touch with their Victorian heritage, other urban areas in Port Perry have not. "The community has been excellent with the redevelopment of the buildings in the downtown core, but (council) has been a little lax in (enforc- . ing the guidelines) other parts of the downtown. The Hwy. 7A corridor has- n't been kept up with the Urban Design Guidelines, and it was included (in the document), said the Ward 2 rep. She suggested that the guidelines should be ge committee enforced township-wide, and that an inventory of all the historical buildings in Scugog should be taken. Councillor Pearce said - township officials should take a look at the roles other similar advisory committees are taking in neighbouring townships, such as Uxbridge and Clarington. "We very much need your input," said Councillor Pearce. "Hopefully you can contin- ue down your path... and work with council and the community to preserve our history." It was later decided that Ward 5 Councillor Paul Michel would repre- sent council on the advi- sory committee. OAKRIDGE GOLF CLUB Opening this Summer...
