EI REIT "WEEKEND STAR" ee EY PRES TREN FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2001 - 11 Auditions for The Fantasticks coming up The Uxbridge Musical Theatre will be holding auditions on Sunday, May 27 for "The Fantasticks," to be staged this fall at the Uxbridge Music Hall. "The Fantasticks," a charming and hilarious love story, is written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, the same duo who wrote UMT's fall 2000 production, | Do! I Do! "The Fantasticks" is a record breaking produc- tion, in its 41st year off- Broadway in New York at the same theatre. The score includes such well known songs as "Try to Remember" and "Soon It's Gonna Rain." "The Fantasticks" tells the story of a young boy and girl who live next door to one another, and whose par- ents are determined their children should fall in love. They go so far as to hire three comic villains to stage an elaborate abduction of the girl, and for the boy to come to her rescue. But, of course, nothing works out quite as everyone expects. "The Fantasticks" has a cast of eight, who can range in age from 15 to 70. Besides the boy, the girl and the chief villain, a dashing Spaniard named El Gallo, there are the children's sin- gle parents (who can be either fathers or mothers), and two aged actors who assist El Gallo (they can also be of either sex). Another character, who assists El Gallo in his role as narrator of the play, neither sings nor speaks, but must be an accomplished dancer. A young woman is preferred for this role. "The Fantasticks" will be performed Sept. 27 to 29 and Oct. 4 to 6 in the Music Hall. Director is Roger Varley -from the Uxbridge Players, the musical director is UMT's Conrad Boyce, and the choreographer is Christina Carter of Seagrave. Auditions will be held Saturday, May 27 at Trinity United Church on First Avenue South in Uxbridge. Those interested should come preferably at 1:30 p.m., although a second set of auditions will be held at 7 p.m. for those unable to come in the aftemoon. Apart from the non-singing dance role mentioned above, all interested should come with a prepared song (an accompanist will be provid- ed).
