LALA Y KEL WA va JU ' "WEEKEND STAR" No license needed at select locations MNR"s Urban Fishing Festivals to be held next weekend Everyone in the Greater Toronto Area is invited to enjoy a traditional country pastime in an urban set- ting, free of charge, hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR). MNR's Aurora District and partners are putting on four Urban Fishing Festivals on Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8. "Too often we forget that nature is right at our doorstep and this is an excellent opportunity for families to enjoy recre- ational fishing in their own backyard," said Natural Resources Minister John Snobelen. The festivals take place at: a Lake Aquitaine Park in Meadowvale on Saturday, July 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. a Toogood Pond in Unionville, on Saturday, July 7 from noon to 3 p.m. 0 Frenchman's Bay in Pickering on Saturday, July 7 from 10 am. to 2 p.m. and a Fairy Lake in Newmarket on Sunday, July 8 from 10 a.m. to | p.m. The Urban Fishing Festivals offer excellent shoreline fishing opportu- nities in heavily populated urban areas. Some of the species available include perch, sunfish, carp, brown bullheads, suckers, large- mouth bass and even the highly sought-after north- ern pike. There will be a variety of special events, includ- ing educational activities, displays and casting con- tests. A limited supply of fishing rods and tackle will be available for loan at each festival on a first- come, first-served basis. The festivals are part of the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend, which runs from July 6 to 8. During those three days, Canadian resi- dents may fish in Ontario without having to buy a licence. If you don't have a licence you must abide by Conservation Licence lim- its set out in the current Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary, available from MNR offices, on MNR's web site: www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/p ubs/pubmenu.html, or from fishing licence issuers.
