Within a bal- anced portfolio that includes various mutual funds, proper manage- ment of risk is equally important. Wise investors will often utilize Asset Allocation Funds to address this issue, and to increase portfolio returns in the long term, thereby reducing the impact of economic conditions and market corrections. Asset Allocation mutu- al funds, quite simply, are designed to include a diversification of assets within a single fund - such as stocks, bonds and fixed-income instru- ments. These funds are managed with the goal of producing high long-term total returns, with less volatility. The thinking behind it is quite simple and very logical. If one particular asset class in a mutual fund suffers a loss for whatever reason, chances are the loss will be offset by a potential rising return in another asset class - as often hap- pens. Let's take a closer look inside a typical Asset Allocation mutual fund. Within each fund, there are sub-portfolios for each of the asset classes, equity (stocks), fixed income and money mar- ket instruments. The equity portion, for starters, tend to favour heavily traded securities (stocks) to ensure liquidi- ty. They also tend to include foreign contact to guard against a domestic economic downturn. The fixed income portion, on the other hand, is likely spread between federal, provincial, and corporate bonds, as well as foreign bond holdings. And final- ly, the money market component may include treasury bills, certificates of deposit, banker's acceptances, and other short-maturity obliga- tions. Also, keep in mind that Asset Allqcation mutual funds are an ideal RRSP investment solu- tion, usually taking advantage of the 30 per cent foreign content limit. All in all, we know that risk cannot be avoided, it can however, be managed and Asset Allocation mutual funds are a sound way of achieving this. Read a fund's prospec- tus and consult your investment professional Inimize your risks before investing. Mutual funds are not guaranteed, their values change fre- quently and past perfor- mance may not be repeated. Investors will pay management fees and expenses, may pay commissions or trailing commissions, and may experience a gain or loss.
