The premier has been caught in a very harsh public spotlight in at least two instances in the past couple of weeks: First with his appearance at the Walkerton tainted water inquiry, and, not quite so directly, in reports of his'involvement on discussions on the native occupation of the Ipperwash provincial park. Mr. Harris' performance at Walkerton was disgraceful. The premier had the perfect opportunity, in a highly-publicized setting, to recognize the government's role in the tragedy. His answers could have been direct, absorbed by the public verbatim, without passing through the filter of media interpretation. He could have expressed his government's regret and desire to improve water safety. He could have seized upon an opportunity to make amends. | FRG Instead, he coldly and callously spent his time on the stand denying government responsibility and, presumably, culpability. ~ And on Ipperwash, the premier is about to be flushed out. He has insisted for years that he and his government exerted no pres- sure on police to remove protesters from the park. Police actions, of course, led to the slaying of an unarmed protester. Now documents from that time reveal a premier who was chafing to toss protesters from the land; the recollections of others Clearly, time's running out for Mike Harris..And he continues to deny the obvious. TT, GA ------- a Tm, _ er a ei aa I ---------- Th tT Thanks for supporting Big Bike To the Editor: It's not every day you see a 30-seat, one- ton cycle moving down the street, but Thursday you may have been lucky enough to run across one. Our Port Perry Big Bike for Stroke event was held on Thursday, July 5. It was a great success. Through the three Big Bike for Stroke events held in Durham East, we raised $27,000. Oshawa"s event raised over $15,000; Bowmanville's raised over $8,000 and the Port Perry event raised almost $4,000. Port Perry's Big Bike for Stroke event was an entertaining evening, with lots of enthu- siasm, exercise and a great deal of fun. Here is a list of teams that participated and the revenue they raised for stroke research, along with our top fundraiser and award winners. Thanks to all our teams and partic- ipants. a The Township of Scugog - $1,730 a Canadian Tire - $150 0 Royal Bank - $1,168 a Bank of Montreal - $670 a Re/Max - $206 a West Shore Village - $45 (donated in lieu of participation) The top fundraiser was Marion Lee who raised a total of $1,100. The spirit award will be given this year to the Royal Bank. The mountain bike winner is Cathy Ballingall from the Royal Bank. Congratulations everyone on a great day. A special thank you to Reid's Independent Grocer for hosting the event, Canadian Tire for donating a mountain bike, Still Water for donating water and the police for providing such enthusiastic escorts for the event. We couldn't have done it without the support of our volunteers and all the teams that came out for the day. Thanks again for making the Port Perry event such a huge success. Hope to see you again next year. Well done. S. Ogilvie, Port Perry
