FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001 on! ISLAND TAXI 905 9854axi (8204) By Heather McCrae Weekend Star When the North American Junior Dressage Championships were held recently in Batavia, Ohio, the Canadian team'was well represerited. The "A" team, represented by a teen from Alberta and three young riders from across Ontario, including 16-year-old Becky Elming of Uxbridge, claimed a bronze medal. Three Canadian teams participated, as well as three U.S. teams, a squad from Australia and a Sihgle rider from Costa Rica. The American was brought home the gold and silver medals while Canada was awarded the bronze. When Becky was an infant she began her love affair with horses. Beginning to ride at an early age, she was coached in" dressage by Kim Goodyear, who is also her aunt, at her stables north of Uxbridge. Since 11, Becky has been coached by Tom Dvorak, a former Olympian and third-level dressage coach, as well as her aunt. Since November 2000, Becky's partner in the dressage ring has been Domingo, a seven-year-old Rheinlander gelding. Owned by a syndicate, of which Becky's family owns several shares, the horse continues to show his talents. "When Domingo came here he knew 'Becky Elming, a 16-year-old Uxbridge resident, and Domingo, helped Canada grab bronze at the recent North American Junior Dressage Championship. Riding with the bes Becky Elming helps Team Canada to a bronze medal all the basics in dressage, even more than Becky, and they both continue to learn together," Ms. Goodyear says. " As for Becky, she has only praise, too, for her mount. "He has the most comfortable trot and loves to work. He's the best horse I've ever had." | To be eligible for the Canadian team, Becky had to qualify first of all. "Rebecca was the top Canadian going into the championships," said Ms. Goodyear. Prior to the North American Junior Dressage Championships, Becky and Domingo attended a training camp at the York Equestrian Centre in Newmarket where, they had time to prepare for the competition and meet the other team members.' When Becky was in Ohio she received an invitation from the Belgium judge to compete in the World Championships this September, but had to regretfully decline. "I feel it was a huge compliment to be asked to compete, but because of timing and finances I couldn't make it." But her competitions haven't finished this year, yet. Two weeks ago Becky and Domingo competed well in Quebec in the FEI Junior Classes, winning a red ribbon . and two second-place awards. The next big competition the pair 'is currently training for is the most presti- gious dressage show in the U.S. In late September, Becky and Domingo will be competing in the Devon Dressage Show Turn to Page 23 Durham Pony Club to be represented at nationals Jordan Thompson and Katie Murray, members of the local Durham Pony Club, have qualified to repre- sent the Central Ontario Region at the 2001 Canadian Pony Club National Tetrathlon Championships, being held August 6-11 based at Loon Lake Camp in the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest (University of British Columbia). Tetrathlon is a very demanding phases of eventing, with penalty Skaters pass summer tests Congratulations to the . Senior Bronze Dances: competition with four parts: swim- ming, shooting (with air pistols), run- ning and riding. Scoring varies with the phase. In swimming, points are given for the time taken to complete a fixed distance (50-200m, depending on level). In shooting, the points are given for the number of shots in the target and their position in the target, similar to darts. Running is scored by time taken to complete a cross-coun- try course. Riding is scored like the cross-country and stadium jumping points for refusals, falls, rails down in the stadium portion, and taking longer than the optimum time to complete the course. At the National level, it is impracti- cal to trailer horses across the-coun- try, so competitors located near enough to the competition site loan their horses to those from further away. Owners ride on one day, non- owners ride another.
