"WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 2001 - 1 Finding a new calling in life Port Perry woman turns to auctioneering By Chris Hall Weekend Star Brooke Holtby has opened up anew door for herself when it comes time to choose a career in the near future. While the 21-year-old Port Perry woman has just one more year left at Trent University where she is studying History, she chose to expand her options for the future this summer by attending the Western Canada School of Auctioneering in Calgary. | There, from July 16 to 28, Ms. Holtby studied up to 10 hours a day, six days a week to learn a trade that is becoming increasingly more popular amongst young adults. "It was a great experience; I learned so much and it was great fun," said Ms. Holtby, who plans on returning to Trent University in the fall. "We learned everything you need to know about run- ning an auction, from bit-calling to legalities and setting up trust accounts and how to start up our own business. "All the things you need to know." During her two-week stay at the school, Ms. Holtby met and befriended the majority of her 19 classmates, who ranged in age from 18 to their mid-70s. "You kind of get close to people when you spend that much time with them each day," said Ms. Holtby, who was chosen as class president. "Everyone had a different background, and that made it exciting when you met someone new. It was a great experience where | got to meet new people, learn a lot about auctioneering and it was a good help to build your confidence and self-esteem." While she readily admits that becoming an auction- eer wasn't the first stop planned on her career path, Ms. Holtby explains that the process of bidding and selling is one that intrigues her. "Originally I wanted to do art appraisal, but it was too expensive," she said. "But I'm an animal person and when my dad saw the ad for the school and showed it to me, | got interested in becoming a purebred auc- tioneer." Now, she is fully trained in all the elements of auc- tioneering, "from livestock, real estate, farm equipment and all kinds of other avenues, some of which I know and others I'd like to explore." Currently, Ms. Holtby is working a number of odd Looking at different career opportunities, Port Perry's Brooke Holtby attended the Western Canada Auctioneering School in Calgary. but she stresses that she is available to work: charity auctions.
