12 THE DALY TIMES-GAZITTL, Wednesday, July 9, 1958 "The Later Churchills" Fine, Scholarly Book For those who have wondered what happened to the famous Churchill family between the deaths of the great Duke of Marl- borough and his termagant Duch- ess Sarah and its re-emergence in our time with Lord Randolph Church and his son, Sir Winston, there is good news: British Author A. L. has re- turned to his favorite task, writ- ing about the farnous family, in his new book, "THE LATER CHURCHILLS" (The Macmillan Company of Canada Ltd.,) which tells the story of the intervening years in the record of that aston- ishing family. Readers will recall that in "THE EARLY CHURCHILLS", Mr. Rowse described their origins and emergence into a leading| position in the England of Queen Anne, This time he has a more ambitious program to follow -- it covers the 18th and 19th centur-| jes. the Georgian and Victorian Ages, coming down to our own time. The book concludes with Sir Winston's retirement from politics. It is interesting' to note that the great Duke was succeeded by his grandson, another soldier. Mr. Rowse has used the arch- ives at Blenheim Palace and has been able to portray this young man's education on the continent from the archives, too, come the Jove-letters of the young duke to his Duchess while on service overseas where he died. The Spencers brought a new strain into the stock. They were devoted to the arts, painting connoisseurship, collecting pic US. Handling Negro Lousy -- Sociologist TORONTO (CP)--A southern United States Jesuit sociologist | says the U.S. has done a "terri! ally lousy" job of handling it: Negro problem. Rev. Louis Twomey of Loyola University, New Orleans, Monday told the summer school of Cath- olic Action "Our situation in the South has undermined the whole Western world. If misery loves company we have lots of it in the Western world." He said the U.S. had consist- ently and insistently undermined the standard of the Negro, deny ing him the opportunity to reac! the same reconomic and educa tional levels as the white popula tion. ""The situation in the South i the most serious. But generally it is bad throughout the whole country." He said the English, French and Dutch had sowed the seeds of racial strife through their colonial policies. The U.S. had failed to become a colonial power only because of its historical position as a late- comer as an expanding nation. Father Twomey said. But it had used the southern Negro to en- rich itself as other nations had tures, books, gems, china. Blen- heim Palace became a treasure- house -- uniil the dispersal of many of its treasures in the Vie- torian Age; an extraordinary story in itself. MANY MARRIAGES There were a number of mar- riages with beautiful American girls, of whom the most celebrat- were Jennie Jerome and Con- suelo Vanderbilt. These marriag- es revivified this ancient stock, restored its fortune and raised its energies 'to new heights of power and vigor. The outside career of Sir Win- ston Churchill is eloquent proof of this point. The last section of the book tells the story of that life, and brings out in a mew perspective its many ups and downs, its set-backs as well as the final triumph. Author Rowse is firmly of the opinion that people and families are the real unities and entities of history -- not arguments and abstractions. He has had a most unusual opportunity with this re- markable family, whose story he concludes with this volume. It is to his credit that he has made fullest use of his opportun- ity to portray a rich diversity of characters; Georgian soldiers, statesmen, archbishops; Regency rakes and eccentrics; Victorian reformers and the gay figures of Edwardian society, in England and America.
