- PROGRESS DIRECTORY H. W. Hoskin H. W. Hoskin started in the cement tile busi- ness over 11 years ago. He began with three men and has built his business up to include a summer staff of 18 and 10 in winter. In the beginning H. W. Hoskin Cement Tile was engaged in making cement well cribbing. Today the firm has eight trucks and four years ago bought a gravel pit at Bowmanville. Hoskins also supply loam and sand. A steady staff of eight is maintained. Five new machines were purchased during 1958 including three front-end loaders, a bulldozer and a small back-hoe. The company is located at 150 Harmony road south and Hoskin avenue, Originally it occupied a 40-acre site but now uses only four. (See Advertisement on Page 9A) I. Collis and Sons This firm was established by the late Isaac Collis in 1914 at 50-54 King street, west, the pres- ent location. The store was remodelled and en- larged in 1923 and the floor space doubled in 1930. The basement and upstairs sections were opened in 1931, making three retail floors. During this time, Mr. Isaac Collis was joined in business by his three sons Max, Sam and Ben. Max Collis op- erates the Oshawa business today while Ben Col- lis operates one of the larger department stores in Peterborough, Ont. (See Advertisement on Page 13B) Ideal Fish And Chips Ideal Fish and Chips run by three sisters, Misses Ray, Jean and Kathleen McQuaig, has proved to be one of the most successful and ex- panding specialized food businesses in Oshawa. The sisters started the business in 1942 and are still pushing ahead. Their first location was next to the old library building on Athol St. West. They are presently located in the McQuaig- Ire- land block, 17 Athol W. (See Advertisement on Page 20B) Ireland Studios Anyone wishing to have their photograph taken can be assured of the finest possible service at Ireland Studios. Mr. Ireland has received many merit awards from the Ontario Society of Photo- graphers, of which he is a director. He is con- stantly abreast of the latest methods and tech- nique in modern photography and attends at least one course a year. He has completely new and modern equipment and has the services of his wife, who is an able, experienced, photographic technician, for coloring and retouching, as well as four first rate photographers who assist at the many weddings which he photographs. Jackson Supply Ltd., located in Oshawa for ten years, is now doing more than five times the business handled by the firm ir 1949. Ken Jack- son, President and general Manager of the comp- any moved his firm from Peterborough to Oshawa in 1949. At that time there were only four em- ployes. Now there are 18 employed by the comp- any. The company supplies wholesale parts to in- dustry and garages, with much of it's business in the automotive field. It can supply all major parts for popular makes of cars, including motor and transmission parts. With the increasing pace in the production of the automobile industry, Jack- son Supply Ltd., has had to stay abreast of the advances. The company's supp.y of stock is now five times as large at it was in 1949, a modern mach'ne shop has been installed, and three sales- men are continuously employed. (See Advertisement on Page 8B) Jamieson Drugs . Jamieson Drugs, 241 King St. E., specialize in their dispensary service. They employ three graduate druggists as well as two full time and two part time staff. Mr. Jamieson received his education in Oshawa and served his apprentice- ship at Jury and Lovell's. He opened the store November 7, 1947. (See Advertisement on Page 9B J. Foley Plumbing Co. J. Foley Plumbing company has been serving Oshawa for eight years. Their business has been built on speed and efficiency of service. At pres- ent the company has 27 employes in their service department and a fleet of six well equipped trucks with which to serve the city of Oshawa and the surrounding area east to Cobourg and west to Pickering.
