The Oshawa Dairy Limited was started by George Hart in 1910, not in Oshawa at that time but on farms in the country. By 1927 he had mov- ed his business to it's present 'ocation on Simcoe St. 8. The company now employs 70 people who work on the deiivery routes, of which there are now 34, having the use of modern eauipment. No fewer than 10,300 homes are serv- ed through the dairy delivery service, and over the last two years the company has added carton milk to the long list of goods which it sells throughout the city. : (See Advertisement on Page 10B) Oshawa Discount House The Oshawa Discount House located at 29 Albert St., first started in business on Oct. 2% 1958. In order that they may get their goods straight the suppliers by picking them up themselves the firm is closed three days a week but is open from Tell Story Statistics in themselves are dull, often indigestible, but they can tell a story, point to a trend or disclose facts which contain a wealth of interest. Take these two groups of fig- ures, for example: 1947, 13.6, 25.1 and 1956, 9.2, 29.9. They add up to the fact that in the nine years from 1947 the birthrate per 1000 population went up while the marriage rate went down, The marriage rate in 1947 was 13.6 and the birth rate was 25.1. In 1956 the marriage rate was only 9.2, but the birth rate was 29.9. Which means more babies from fewer people. An immediate question is why? BIRTH RATE The answer seems to lie in the uncertain economic future which faced the country in 1947 and the World War Two hangover of in- security still prevalent at that time. There have been fluctuations in the birth rate since 1947, but the general trend is towards an in. crease. And wars, of course, breed marriages -- which probably ac- counts for the high 136 rate in 1947. The pattern since then has been one of fewer marriages, in- dicating the practice of greater selectivity among potential mates, a seftling down to nor- mality. Tax rate figures since Oshawa |became a city in 1924 tell another | story. : | The 1924 rate was 43 when the | population was 16,659. In 1956 {with a population of 49,723 the irate had gone up only to 61. | This points to the higher cost |of services 35 years ago, but the city was also drawing heavily upon debentures. The debenture OTTAWA (CP) -- Government legislation to boost the borrowing power of the St. Lawrence Sea- way Authority passed through the Commons Wednesday with only a slight hitch. Subject of a heaied debate last week, the bill moved rapidly through final stages after a CCF attempt to launch a committee study was defeated by a vote of 190 to 7. The Progressive Con- servatives and Liberals teamed) to outvote the CCF. Frank Howard (CCF--Skeena) urged that to prevent further and to make charges; Among the NFA changes is one mortgages and another guaran-|an approved lender rather ham lio permit CMHC to buy and selliteeing the entire housing loan of|the present 92 per cent. Government Legislation [Fs fie 3 Passes Through Commons | charges of inefficiency, bungling and gross miscalculations the Commons should delay approval in principle -- second reading-- until the Commons railway com- mittee studied the bill. The bill, which increases the; seaway authority's borrowing power to $335,000,000 from $300,- 000,000 now goes to the Senate. | BOOST LENDING POWER 1 The Commons also gave speedy approval in principle to a bill to} raise the lending powers of Cent: ral Mortgage and Housing Cor- poration to $1,000,000,000 from 73 debt then was $3,091,235. It in- creased to the $5,000,000 mark by| 1930, then droped steadily to the {lowest point in its history -- $517,- 1901 in 1946. 1 | The war again made known its |influence. The national effort caused severe cutbacks in munic- |ipal services expansion and | brought about low tax rates -- as |little as 24.5, | In 1947, though, the year when | babies were blossoming in larger numbers, the tax rate climbed to! 31.5 and the debenture debt be- gan piling up again. By 1951 it was over $3,000,000. Five years : later it was at the all time high |of $10,298.212.
