Mec Farland is expected to pass through the Soo canal today, marking the official 1959 opening of the waterway. The McFarland, scheduled to pick up cargo at the Algoma steel mills here, has been standing in the lower St. Mary's River, awaiting assistance from the ice- breaker Mackinaw. The McFarland may be joined today by the Buckeye, a sister ship in the Columbia Line The Manzutti of the Manzutti Bteamship Company will move through the American locks to- day for the Algoma steel mills but the vessel wintered at the Soo, and her passage does not mark official opening of the canal. After clearing a path for the McFarland the Mackinaw likely will move on to Whitefish Bay at| the east end of Lake Superior to Eevee a channel for down- nd ships. The United States coast guard geports that ships at Superior, Wisconsin, Duluth, Minnesota and at the Lakehead are prepar- ing to move downbound Wednes- day and if thev meet favorable fce conditions should arrive at the Soo canal Thursday. | STORE HOURS 9:30 AM.
