This is the last article in this said very little about treatment. I have assured you that mental illness is often preventable and usually curable; but I have nol sald how these things are done. First of all #t should be noted that there was always a natural tendency toward recovery long before our modern treatments were developed. Many of our pa: tients would still recover in time if we gave them no treatment whatever. With these patients, particularly those with de pressive illnesses, our function is to hurry along their recovery and get them back into the commun- ity in a fraction of the time ft would otherwise have taken. There is no doubt that electro- therapy is still the most reliable method of treatment in most cases of depression; but I should note that we are now using sev- eral medications that may be equally effective. For excited states we have many excellent sedatives and it is rare indeed to find a hospital that still uses prolonged baths or re straints for the agitated patient. The many tranquillizers have made an enormous impact on psy- chiatric treatment both inside and outside of hospitals. The Tyhurst Report concluded |that psychiatry was now particu [larly effective in curing the acute symptoms of mental illness. This showed in the statistics on dis: charge rates from all across the country. But the Report also noted that the re-admission rate had also risen.
