10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, Mey 23, 1959 Api "LIVELY ACTION AROUND KEYSTONE Sick Lively action around 2nd base seems to be in order here as Red Sox shortstop Don Buddin takes to the air, as Ray Boone, Kansas City 1st baseman, is forced at 2nd base, in their game the other day. The action SPORTS MENU By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR led to Pete Runnels, who flipped 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' ST. LOUIS CARDS haven't exactly been setting the National League on fire, as of late, but they came up with a 14-inning vic- tory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday, 38-1 and put themselves right back in business. Los Angeles Dodgers nosed out the S.F. Giants 2-1 and that enabled them to cling to second place while Milwaukee Braves knocked off the Phillies 10-5 and tightened their own grip on first place. In other Major League action, American League, Cleveland Indians nosed out Detroit Tigers 10 to hold first place by a half-game over the White Sox, who defeated Kan- sas City 2-1. Baltimore Orioles, on a one-hitter by Wilhelm, forc- ed the Yankees to take a couple of deep breaths of that cellar air, just when a lot of folks figured they were only on the bottom for a brief stay. Boston Red Sox nosed out Washington 4-3, so the AL. pennant race continues to be a very hectic affair, Not nearly as hectic, however, as the International League scramble, which has Miami still on top, even after losing to Buffalo Bisons 3-2 yes- terday. Bisons are a half-game back as of now Sugar Ray, Carmen Basilio, in fact, almost everybody in the least way interested--appears to be "hollering." And all the Joe-on-the-street wants to know, is when are we going to see a fight. It becomes more-and-more apparent, that this stick-handling between world championship bouts, with the in- come tax boys and revenue officers grabbing the big share of the take--which actually, these days, is provided by TV contracts, is forcing a hold-up as far as the fans ar. con- cerned. They want action and all this debate business before Commissions, in court, or where it may be, is of little inter- est to the guy who pays the freight. One of these days, the fight fans are going to all go fishing and if that ever happens, the promoters, managers and of course, Sugar Ray, Basilio and the rest, are going to wonder what happened. BRIGHT BITS: -- Toronto baseball interests, headed by Jack it Cooke of course, are jubilant over the news that a third Ma- jor League baseball circuit may be operating within four or five years. But where will they play ? HARRY DAVIDOW was denied a license by the New York State Athletic Commission yes- terday, so now Gus D'Amato's "stooge'--as he is called by some --can not tutor Ingemar Johannson in his world title bout against D'Amato"s man, Floyd Patterson. Imagine such discrimination ? . . . ALEX MITEFF defeated Wayne Bethea last night in another of those heavyweight bouts that continue to make the average fan wonder if any of these so-called "contenders'" can really hit They landed plenty--hoth of them--but both were up-and-around at the end of 10 rounds . RUSSIA'S tennis program is progress- ing so well, they expect to have a Davis Cup contender within a few.yvears and if they put in a team, you can bet it will 'be a con- tender . They made their statements Friday at a hearing before the New York Athletic Com- mission considering removal of Robinson's title. The hear- ing was adjourned until Wed- nesday. Tempers rose with the tem- perature in the crowded meeting room as the lawyers bickered with one another and with the witnesses.
